See allAs a person who's read this book three times now, I can safely say that this story is a masterpiece.
This artful retelling of The Illiad strikes out as one of, if not the most, beautifully written love stories that I've ever come across.
The writing is lush, gorgeous, a testament to the beauty of what literature can be.
The characters, though already known through its original telling, is somehow brought to new life, with masterful approach from the point of view of the main character, Patroclus.
The plot and pacing is page-turning, smooth, something that genuinely takes you away from the monotony of day-to-day life.
And the ending...truly, the definition of a tragedy.
I laughed. I was pissed. I cried. This and this and this.
Pros:
- I like the messages/themeing
- I like the pacing
- The writing is still good...so Stephen King
- I liked Don/Trig as a villain
- This is the book where I felt connected with Holly the most
Cons:
- Some characters were heavily underdeveloped
- The questions asked and mysteries given were solved way too easily
- Trigs character felt underutilized, at least, his motivation for becoming a serial killer
- The cross dressing phsycho trope
- The ending was mid
