Incredibly boring and its obvious that the author has a foot fetish.
also here's a bit from the book that really confused me:
“Don't flush,” I'd said, “I want to look.” What I saw brought out strains of compassion for him, for his body, for his life, which suddenly seemed so frail and vulnerable. “Our bodies won't have secrets now,” I said as I took my turn and sat down. He hopped into the bathtub and was just about to turn on the shower. “I want you to see mine, I said. He did more. He stepped out, kissed me on the mouth, and, pressing and massaging my tummy with the flat of his palm, watched the whole thing happen.
first of all, what. Second of all, why?
We really didn't need that imagery in our heads Mr. Aciman.
It started off so good and I loved it but then.... yeah. Just went downhill from there.
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS IVE EVER READ.
This isn't my type of book but I'm so glad I picked it up when I did because I already decided I wasn't ever going to read it but I was bored at the store so I bought this and started reading and was HOOKED.
anyways, read this book or have bad luck for 15 years
I really liked it at the start but it kinda went downhill for me. Im not a fan of sci-fi but this story sounded too good to not read. I don't regret reading it though! its a solid story!
I looooved the atmosphere of this book, all dark and dusky but the characters were so bright. It was a fun little read :)
3.5 stars
ehhhhh.. this was a really really really enjoyable book in terms of writing style (omg ! ! need to read more from this author) and characters. The characters were so well written, it felt like I knew them personally. If the characters weren't so well written this book would be a 1 star, without the characters this book would fall apart.
It was interesting at first, I couldn't solve the mystery but when it does get solved.. its underwhelming. stupid really.
if I had to describe this entire book I would say its a rollercoaster. waiting in line for an hour, excitement building, youre kinda getting annoyed about waiting so long, you finally get on and you're way too excited, you cant wait for the big drop of the coaster. slowly climbing up to the big reveal, getting ready to be shocked, ready for the ride of your life and then the rollercoaster stops just before it plummets down. The ride broke, you have to get off the emergency exit and climb down the stairs. All that waiting and you were only a second away from your excitement being fulfilled but it all falls flat.
the ending was whack. Weirdly thrown in, it makes sense but still..
The first half of the book basically copied IT by Stephen king. a group of boys and one red head girl that they had a crush on. The red head girl has a abusive father, one of the boys is a master at celebrity impersonations, one of the boys dates girls that are just like his mum, the bullies are basically the same ones from IT, and many more I cant say because of spoilers.
It doesn't sound like much but when you read it, you'll think of IT straight away. Way too many similarities.
anyways in conclusion, started of really good, it was so addictive and the writing is phenomenal but I came away disappointed. It was a massive let down
its nice knowing how someones love life goes on during a world war that affects their whole life but there was way too much romance, I would've liked more war focused chapters.
Went into this thinking I would love it because of how the book was described but its kinda misleading, I really didn't know it would be this romance heavy
Thought this would be a fun light hearted story... nope.
It broke my heart. Its just a really sad book and I can't say why because of spoilers but it is a must read!
anyways, I'm off to go cry now
I was so excited to read this bc the plot sounded really unique and exciting but yeah...
Great writing and I love how well I got to knew the characters but the main character annoyed me so much.
I can't wait to read this authors other book!
its sad that the author died before knowing that the golden state killer has finally been caught and I hope she knew how much she helped and we appreciate her work
i really recommend that if you choose to read this book then please read the 20th anniversary edition like i did. It gives stats on gun violence since this book was written in 2000.
I live in australia and the last mass shooting we had was in 1996 and it wasn't on our mainland but in tasmania. After that our government banned guns, bought our guns off us and then destroyed them all. Australians now live normal lives without fearing being shot down in normal places such as school, work, leisure time. Yes we still do have gun violence and knife crimes but it's extremely rare. The gun violence we do have here rarely turn out fatal and it's always a personal matter, rarely someone shooting up strangers.
This book was set in the US and most of the stats the book gave were about US violence. It's crazy that now days the US has a mass shooting every day of the year. Kids are killed getting an education all because their government refuses to ban guns.
There is absolutely no reason for most guns to exist. I actually agree with households keeping guns to protect their homes and themselves (unpopular opinion) but there is no reason a person should be able to buy a weapon that is designed for mass destruction. Most assault rifles are bad for hunting as it causes too much damage to the animal and you can't salvage any meat or fur/skin and they are mostly used for wars and army training. They are made to kill humans and here are some governments letting average citizens buy them! it's unbelievable. Saw a post on instagram the other day of an average man in america who owns a bazooka. He lives in a little flat, has a criminal backround!!! but has a bazooka.
As i said before, i do personally think households should be able to keep a pistol to defend their homes (if they are permitted to, backround checks and training will have to be a must) but there is no reason for an average citizen to own a gun that causes severe damage.
This book heavily focuses on bullying and i feel like if you were never bullied then you'll never understand how mentally taxing it is to even step foot into school.
I can only speak from the Australian high school experience. Most Australian high schools have a huge popularity issue, popular kids feel superior and put unpopular kids down. Most schools here don't have in school sport or cheerleaders, all that stuff is outside school activity so our popularity isnt based on those two sports but rather looks or how much of a dickhead you can be. It's harsh here but students usually unite no matter their popularity.
to be completely honest... authors need to stop adding books to series they said were completed.
This reminded me of allegiant, so different from the original plot and storyline, characters are not the same (not in a character development way, in a loss of personality way) and its just weird.
Juliette and Warner shouldn't be together. they have no chemistry and they both just suck
I have a love/hate relationship with this series. I hated the first book, hated half of the second book, loved half of the second book and LOVED the third book and now..... this book...
I don't like Warner still lol
I'm so mad about how much time I wasted reading this.
It's getting closer to winter here in Australia and it's good to know I have kindling for a fire.
[6th re-read] so here i am having just read this book for the 6th time making it my most read book ive ever read. This story is important yet so disturbing. It's hard to read this book again and again but Sadie is the character that is on my mind a lot. She is the character that feels so real to me and my heart aches for her but she doesn't exist.. but she does in the women around us and thats the sad part. Definite TW if you ever want to read this but this book changed my life and i think i'll forever love sadie.

April 2020:
One of the best books to exist and it was better the second time around. I'm so in love with this book
a lovely book about disabilities!
It would be a nice book to give to a child (8-13) to teach them about respecting people with disabilities (aka people are more than their disabilities)
I preordered the second book but found the audiobook for it already and I cant wait to listen to it tonight! :)
this book keeps disappearing from my shelves even though i read it in January, goodreads please PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER
