Tradycyjnie zaokrąglone w górę – prawdziwa ocena to 2,5 gwiazdki.
I have mixed feelings. I understand the hero is meant to be a boy in man's body, but still, his behaviour is very immature, even for a boy. 2,5 stars rounded up.
Year of Vorkosigan #1
I decided to reread the whole Vorkosigan series in internal chronology order in a year. Reading two books / stories a month will give me a month to spare.
So, I started with “Dreamweaver’s Dilemma”, but as it does not have a standalone edition I read the whole collection.
The DD I would rank three-and-half stars, the first three stories are between three and three-and-half. But the whole collection is elevated by the last one – “Aftermaths” – which is a five stars story. But more about it when I get to the Shrads of Honour.
The only problem I had with this book is that: everytime someone said something like this Godlike Awful Aliens tried to Kill All Humans 2 billion years ago I wanted to scream What humans!? Some algae, most likely! They were probably simply alienforming... (OK, probably not simply but I fail to see the Awfulness of it).
Rachel is bearable in small doses. One book every few months, no more. She can come with a clever idea, but why, for instance, would she ask Al to get her summoning name back, and then question everything he did to do as she asked? I do wonder sometimes that Al did not strangle her, no matter how valuable she is :->.
The whole series is great, with the first book being my favorite. If I could give half-stars rating it would be 5 for the first volume, 4 for the second and 4.5 for the third one. But somehow rounding the 4.5 to 5 this time does not seem right, so 4 stars it is.
I have a Thing about stupid protagonists. I do understand that George Dower had to be like that for the plot to work, but it does not mean I have to like it...
Książka odkopana po remoncie, Ogólnie jest dobrze, choć oczywiście każdy będzie miał swoich faworytów. Mnie osobiście najmniej wzruszył Piekara. Nie lubię jego stylu i już.
I'd say that whoever came with the “Harry Potter meets Ocean's Eleven” tagline (probably the author himself) did not read/see neither of them...
Mam ochotę siąść i rozrysować sobie „linię życia” Maksyma... Ciekawe ile cykli by mi wyszło. :-)
Could do without the black character, but what's there beside him is still a good exploration story. The exploring is concentrated on the starship, but that is all right, there 3 more volumes for exploring other things.
Of course not what I expected (Pirates! Space battles!) ;-), but nevertheless very good. Still, I can understand that someone not warned in advance that this is book one with more to come could be disgruntled because of the open ending.
Three stories, two of them predictable and with very unsympathetic protagonists. The first one a bit better, but unfortunately dated – today the main clue would have to be set up in advance, probably spoiling the discovery...
Not sure what to think. The ending seems rushed and there is no hint of a third volume coming up, but this one feels incomplete.
This was a strange one. Somewhat like a Douglas Adams book, but a lot darker.
Think of the final parts of Fforde's Shades of Grey compared to his Thursday Next series.
