This was terrible 
I was willing to give it at least two stars because I really don't like giving bad rating in people's artistic endeavours, I was willing to look for something redeeming to have something nice to say, until not only was Leith's family killed, but they'd been dead the whole time and instead of just uncovering it it had to done through a child's letters to her brother. trying to add a dramatic moment by way of tragedy is one thing, doing it in an excessively visceral way is just uncalled for imo. 

Finally a book about birds that understands how terrible birds really are! Everyone should read it
