this had a very interesting concept in terms of the spin given to the main character. often the ability to be part of an investigation was narrowed down to being a genius, having faced a serial killer before, or being in the military. this however is a novel idea. A magician or illusionist.
obviously coming from the unique understanding of the authors looking glass into both fields though his own skillset and that of the people around him he crafted a character that is a unique blend of information.
I do have to say that I enjoyed a male author in his attempt on a female character and was happy that It was not over-sexualized as other than the few parts that seemed alright. you can also see the author's thoughts on certain topics such as religion and certain human behavior through Jessica's thoughts at the beginning of the book.
while all of these gives a book aimed for success i was slightly disappointed by the ending but not to much but its what kept the rating at a 4 and not a 5
A breath of fresh air to the historical romance genre. and increased importance to the movements of feminism in the era rather than the age-old tale of male owns the women and their utter helplessness to their without the males. this shows a tale of rebellion and strength amongst the ranks of the women
there are other carefully places literary references as well as historical references that allow the characters more dimension and make us identify more with them. it also gives much more substance and flows to the storytelling.
I feel as this is almost a satire on the victorian era as the queen the woman that is the head of state is opposing the same right that she has had by birth. it almost brings forth the issue were women born into privilege do not recognize their advantage and at the same time ridicule people that work to receive the same advantage that was not given to them based on their birth
while being only 278 or so pages this book packed a punch. while many mysteries are a police procedural this leaned more towards a trail procedural. the process of the trail was splendidly covered with the corresponding reactions from either side of the trail. Ms. Clark is a wonder at hiding clue that subliminally cue us towards the answer at the same time giving us the answers to some of the questions while making us anxious, hoping that the characters would be able to find out the answers in time
She expertly intertwined three storylines providing us with anxiety that paced the book. the integration of the three timelines where done extremely seamlessly that one feel that this is the only way the story would have made any sense.
the pacing was incredible. I did not have a chance to have a sigh of relief that the characters we going to be fine. I was on my feet almost pacing. till the last 2 pages. what a climax. This is not going to be a character-based study. you're not going to have the individual dwelling thoughts as well as the one on one romance science that last chapters. this was a more overall situational study that jumped from one POV to the other which gave as a wide range of story was well as keeping the pace fast
It's a 3.5 star for me
this was an interesting experience indeed. there was a push and pull within me as I read it because of the fact that this was the work of J. K. Rowling. there were parts of me that were expecting the same pacing as the harry potter books while trying to justify that these were not going to be them because this was her expressing a new kind of writing.
the basics withing the writing style where quite similar in a sense where there was a lot of situation setting as well as building the world of Corcoran Strike. the revelation of the main character as he navigates the world with characters that are very vivid. this was relatively slow-paced where all the clues were given to us by the different characters which involved a very long process of investigation that ended up being a good 300 hundred out of the 500 plus book page. it is not going to be the fast-paced police procedural you are used to but at the same time it is quite indicative of her style of writing
in comparing her books to other crime novels I have read I can't say that it is one of the best. it makes a decent attempt but is not worlds apart in terms of a difference in evoking the suspense of having a better twist. it is a crime novel that enjoyed but hopes no one is hyping it as better because of how much they love the author
I won't say the ending was bad. I enjoyed it and the twist was very much a good shock. but was it worth a 500-page explanation I'm not sure?
While this book has its BDSM smutty moments I do like the manner in which the characters are written in the sense that's there is a balanced dynamic in the relationship rather than in some BDSM books that depict a more subservient and unequal dynamic. he has the power in one realm and she has the power in the other. social situations are her domain where he has to listen to what she has to say more than anything else if he wants to make a good impression. but I had an issue with the ending which was rather abrupt which you felt as though there was not much of a conclusion. as though she had 5mins left and had to stop writing the exam. but overall a good book at 3 stars
nnWhat the ever-loving hell. I was not expecting this level of storytelling. Such utter wit and writing. I'm still reeling from listening to the audiobook. Wow. This was the first time I had full-bellied laughed as I was listening to a book. And mind you, I was in public half the time and at home with my family thinking I was a lunatic.
And the level of discussion into the psyche of breaking up after a long term relationship was so beautifully explained. But this book does so much more than the breakup and revenge as well as the hinted new romance. It made you grow with the character. Help her understand that she was more than a relationship. Experience self-worth and go through come out with a new level of knowledge that I had never seen explored so well in another breakup revenge story.
Mhairi McFarlane I one of the best contemporary romance writers I have read and that a complement that almost always reads romance exclusively. I was not all about the typical rebound sex and a good banging with the help you get over it. Nor was it the passion of first glance, and the sex was phenomenal, so I happen to fall in love with him. This was full-on emotional storytelling, which is no easy fit. It is commendable. It is also praiseworthy that this freaking book made me love it so much that I would write the longest book I could every write. What the hell.
PS. to those who consumed this book as an audiobook you know that northern accent was so enticing that as I am writing it, I am imagining myself speaking instead of speaking with a northern accent :)
The story paints a wonderfully colorful image of the Thakur household with all the eccentricities as well as the differences in personality. this was set in the 1980's after the murder of then prime minister Indira Gandhi as well as the roots that took place after. (Ps I lived in Singapore my whole life so if any information about history is wrong I apologize)the manner in which the storyline was entwined with the actual history gave the book some dimension as well as to create a more believable situation this also created better character studies for the main character as well as the problems that they were facing. overall a wonderfully written book
to those reading it don't be afraid of the hi-glish. As a Tamilian myself it took some getting used to but my experience watching Hindi movies helped a lot. but even if you have not experienced what so ever you can still make it through and enjoy it
I really loved this book. I surprised myself in the aspect that I thought that this book was not going to do it for me because it was YA and I had not enjoyed that category of romance for a long time. however, the manner in which the book was written as well as the themes that were discussed. they all created a storyline that felt very real because of the three-dimensional depiction of the characters as well as the multiple links that left us clues along with the ways through the old movie references. if anyone who is a huge old film buff I would think this book would tickle their fancy with the movies mentioned as it would be relatable to what they love and enhoy
this book was alright I guess. The storyline and concept were good but I did not enjoy the delivery. I also took away from the character studies as well as the one on one conversations and descriptions of the situation and atmosphere. while I could not get what I wanted from the book here I I acknowledge that a lot of effort had to be put into the crafting of the emails, text and newspaper articles to create a well-flowing story which was done in this book. but seeing that I almost DNF this book I would advise that new readers should take caution and test out the first few pages if you enjoy it before you purchase the book. because realistically it cannot be the cup of tea for everyone
this book, in the beginning, was one of my favorites in the series with the inclusion of a character escaping from a cult and finding protection with the DSS. but it quickly turned into irritation because of the constant narrative that the female lead wanted to leave to protect the men from death. there is the constant having to address her emotions of inadequacies that it felt like I was reading the same pages over and over again. it was almost as though 20 pages of the book could have been removed and no one would have noticed a difference. there was a sudden change in the character where she was strong and defiant towards the antagonist which did not make sense because the author did not go through the process of showing her growth and went from I am insecure and will stand in a corner and fade away to I am super confident and can fuck over a drug lord. this totally did not make any sense. while I should have given this a1 star there are a few cute and humorous parts that might have saved the story just a little
this was a surprise because a Christmas themed book you normally expect a lot of cliche romance but this was a refreshing twist to average Christmas read. the writing styles as well as the manner in which the authors link her ideas as well as answers the questions that she raises are very beautifully done. I really loved reading this book. I would not qualify it as a thriller or mystery. it's more of a semi mystery and semi romance. it has a lot more to do with the personal journey of Allegra over these experiences I feel. there are a lot more character interactions that suspense building which did not give a thrill factor that I have experienced in previous books of this style but I love the way she wrote and enjoyed the intricacies of the storytelling.
the links I talk of can be seen by readers with the advent calendar and clock, the issues of trusting for Allegra and the bespoke suit
it is also good to note that there is actually a dual mystery so call where there are two parts to the story that give Allegra issues in which on is related to sam and the other is related to her family
wow wow wow
is there anything else I need to say
there is a great representation in the portrayal of both autisms as well as people coming in from overseas as mailorder brides. I can in expecting a relatively good story from all the hype on booktube as well as the review section on good reads. And it did not disappoint. it had a good narrative on both main characters as they move through this time together and working to understand how to coexist in their situation. the ending while not surprising tools a from that I was intrigued by. not what people were expecting from the author. there are many intricacies I want to explore again and review so I will defiantly give this a reread and post a full analysis later on
i really wish it was longer.
the characters felt that there was so much depth that could be involved when looking into the details about the male lead. we understand that he is a boy that was the son of an oil baron as well as a talented artist that is unable to pursue his dreams due to his father. while this is a subject that is lightly touched on and is a dynamic that later comes into light as the male and female lead move more deeply into their romance I feel that this dynamic will alluded to could have used more page space to explain to make the book more substantial in character development rather than making the male lead look quite like a one-dimensional playboy till the last quarter of the book. This could have been the author's decision as she wanted to have a shorter story or one that moved fast. while that is her creative freedom I am disappointed as I was really starting to love the character and was looking to spend more time with them and understanding their stories. overall still nice for a quick read
this is a really cute book while there are no real thrills or climax point at which you are worried about the relationship or the well being of the characters is has a cast of characters that are extremely funny and enjoyable. I love the cajun references as well as this fun-loving book coming off a book that was a thriller this was a wonderful fun time that was welcome
To begin my review on wild like the wind I would like to put forward that I have not read any of the other books in the series. I picked it up at the library and was intrigued by the premise of a motorcycle club as well as the long relationship that the characters have had together. As a stand-alone, the beginning is quite confusing as there are links to other books. but links are minimal where you can still enjoy it regardless. however, if you are reading the whole series this is positive as there is a clear flow of storyline and ideas as the author moves from one book to the next.
the characters were wonderfully written in. the explanation of their past years together as well as their hardship and emotions help put the readers in the right scenario. the dialogue and scenario put in helping us imagine the frustration of losing her husband as well as her gratitude for hound being there to help her as well as starting to become someone she relies on. we can see that she want to be with him, at least have interactions with him due to her insistence that he bring her checks.
the beginning of their relationship is odd with Keely propositioning sex. in which the first half of the book is heavy on the steamy scenes however it also shines some light on the way their relationship progressed. At the beginning of the relationship was simply the two main character satisfying their sexual needs. neither wanting to admit theirs through feelings. over Time the author writes in more dialogue that discusses their jobs, future, and children. there was more dialogue as they become more intertwined in each other
there are a few tear-jerking scenes for where the characters are dealing with their emotions where Keely is dealing with moving on from her dead husband and where Hound is afraid of losing the people he loved as well as dishonoring the man he thought as a brother. there a few moments that you think the trouble is coming and they are diverted which a quite fun with you expecting and calming down wich I fell keep you on your toes
one criticism if I must there are quite a few sex scenes that I feel that some were quite unnecessary to the story itself. they are on repeat some times. loses its purpose to show a change in the relationship. other than that I really have none. enjoy away
Truly a wonderful debut book. one cannot aske for a better book. It is filled with bits of information that make the book so much more wonderful. it keeps you on your toes and turning pages.
the twist at the end is worth all of it. Waiting eagerly for the next installment
The physical book is quite pricy for the content so get an rebook if there is an option. I took a star away because alot of the info is repeated. And some numbers keep changing through the book. But overall a good guide to start with
it is not going to be your typical love story. there are no intense scenes where you can feel the intensity between the couple but rather a book that focuses on the human connection not just between a couple but rather an entire range from friendship, family, and strangers.
it focuses on how the people that have faced the adversity have come together and have grown over the next 10 years as they learn to deal with their trauma and make something out of it. it was in interesting read for me as I often felt I could not read such stories I felt that they would not trill me. I felt that I needed a romance to feel the thrill of a mystery something that could keep me in a book. through this, I realize that where there is a human connection in a book I would be able to read it
quite enjoyable but at the same time quite different from the book written before this. here books such as the witness
DNF
There was huge potential in the story line but unfortunately the execution was really bad. From the beginning it self there was alot of scenes without much context. And the even that followed sequentially felt very odd and haphazard. Lack of flow
An interesting read. while most erotica is quite typical in format and shows the manner in which a healthy relationship in BDSM should look like this book looks at the darker side of thing and is a different perspective that is well appreciated.
I consumed it as an audio book. Completely fell in love with it. But there was repeated sections where there was the same complaint of Zara complaining about her exercise but being quite athletic and strong. It was there so much that I could predict it coming in certain situations
