A fun read! I listened to this on audiobook and found myself happy to press play. It reminded me a bit of Harry Potter, but I suppose anything with a wizard and a school would. I really felt a connection with the characters and wanted them all to be happy. It was a simple story and plot and nothing too deep which is why I rated it three stars. Overall the book was an easy read and I would recommend it to those who enjoy magical reads!
Such a perfect ending! It was a such a great trilogy. Did I cry? Almost... I held it in. I would recommend this series to anyone and everyone. Even if you are the kind of person who is not into fantasy. It's not complicated and the story is heavily character driven. Super sad to be leaving these people but happy to be getting a new story in this universe this September.
Wow! What a page turner! I couldn't put this book down and when I did, I kept thinking about the characters. I will admit at first I was a little confused, not too sure what what completely going on, but I think the author wants you to figure it out slowly so that it's not just told to you. Once it all started to make sense I didn't want it to end! Man what a cliffhanger. The next book is set to arrivr in the next few days and I can't wait to read it! This is a great start to the series.
4.5
I loved it!! Super fast paced read! It felt very magical and gave me Baz Luhrmann vibes which is what the author said she was going for. The story has a mystery which keeps you wanting to know more and more. I found a few quotable moments that were romantic and sweet. I am super intrigued by the world that she built and can't wait to find out more. Is magic real? Is it make believe? The jury is still out. Most people say that the other series (once upon a broken dream) is better, and if that's the case I am in for a treat. I loved this book but gave it 4.5 stars so that there is room for a higher rating. But I highly recommend this book!
I feel that if I read this book vs. listening to the audiobook I might have rated it higher. Based on listening to the book it did not grab me the way I need it to in order to feel fully immersed with the plot and characters. The ending was a little abrupt and is slightly open to interpretation which I appreciate in books. I did have to Google theories and I am satisfied by what the majority thinks. It makes sense and could be good to see if clues were left along the way upon a reread. I'd recommend this book to someone looking for an easy read, more into character development and doesn't mind a simple open ended plot.
Interesting book.. I like the premise of the story. I guess I never really thought much about it, but I apparently like portal fantasy. The book had some really good quotable moments and moments that make you reflect on your own life. The story was short so it felt like everything happened pretty quickly but I suppose that's expected of short stories. I will continue on and read more of the books from this series to see what other stories can be told from this world. Overall a good read and would recommend it.
3.5 Stars. The book was good in many ways and I would say it had my attention early on. Towards the middle my interest and drive to keep reading subsided. I put the book down for a very long time and had no desire to pick it back up. But now that I am out of a reading slump, I decided to finish this book so that I can finish the series. The last quarter of the book picks up again and there is a lot of action. This held my attention and helped me finish it in a short amount of time. I still feel like book 2 was amazing and hard to live up to. I am curious what else is in store for the next books.
3.5 but rounding up!
Good book. Pretty simple plot and the twist was pretty obvious, but it was still an enjoyable read. I found myself wanting to read it and find out what happens next. I think it gives a good look/representation of a mental illness. I am pretty intrigued and would like to know more about how people handle this on a day to day basis. I would recommend this book as a good pallet cleanser between fantasy books (which is what I am doing). It's super easy to read and had some lovable characters.
I wanted to love this but for some reason, I didn't. Took me a while to get through the book and I didn't find myself wanting to pick it up. I feel like I am the exception so please pick this book up yourself and see if it's something you would like. It was not bad at all, it was just okay, which is ok.. I think it helped having seen the tv show so I had faces to the names and I understood the magic system. If I did not watch the show, I would be pretty lost and I would recommend reading Shadow & Bone first. In theory, I like heist stories but it just didn't give me the feeling I was looking for. I will most likely finish the duology and read Crooked Kingdom because I would like to know how it ends, but it might be a while as I have so many other books I am looking forward to reading. Again, it's a good book, just not as amazing as I thought it would be based on the review rating.
Very fast paced book with all of the things I love about fantasy. I love jumping from one storyline to the next, it really keeps you wanting more. This book had magic and portals! What more can you ask for? The author gave you characters to root for and some to hate. There are even some that you hope will make better choices and turn to the “good” side. I am interested in the next book and will read it as soon as I get my hands on it.
Another good volume. The story continues to evolve and leave you wanting for more. There were a few laughs in this volume which I appreciated. On to the next one!
Great book! Lots of action, lots of character development. The ending of the book definitely makes you want to pick up the next one. Lucky for me, I have it! Such a great world Schwab has built and it's a place I'd like to visit myself (if it were possible). Looking forward to the next book and wrapping up the Series!
Ug! It's good!
Spoiler
I think I enjoyed this book because it did not have a happy ending. I like books that make me feel something and I felt her dilemma throughout the book. It's hard to put into words but the feeling of me wanting something else to happen in a book makes it good. I am rooting for the love but be it doesn't happen gives me all the feels. Can't wait to watch the movie.
It's not a five star read because it wasn't profound and deep. It's not a book that I have quotes from or a book I will cherish forever. So a strong 4 stars. Which is still high in my opinion.
Ok I suppose it's time to get my thoughts on paper. I think this was a very good book. I think there was a lot of hype around it and because of that I felt a tiny bit disappointed. So I won't hype this book for you. I will say it had a good amount of twists I didn't see coming. I enjoyed the reveals and the ending as well. I would say there are some trigger warnings so beware. Overall a solid book, not really thriller in my eyes but more psychological, slow burn, with twisted revenge. I would recommend this to someone who is not afraid to read some dark disturbing books.
Great book! Giving it five stars because I feel like I will use everything in this book and have already seen some improvements. I want to get the next book this author has written and “dive deeper”!
Pretty good book, definitely lit a fire under me and for that I am grateful. There are some repetitive things, but you have to hear the same thing multiple times and ways before it can really sink in. A lot of takeaways and ideas to implement! Recommended for those looking for motivation. And highly recommend the audiobook as the author reads it and adds a little commentary to his book.
