You care about the main characters- Finlay, Vero, and Nick - but the plot is just too madcap slapstick for me. I read but skim through the most implausible parts.
Prose so spare and large chunks of time are missing in the narrative yet a compelling read.
Very graphic and detailed. I listened to an audio book and I think I will read the next in the series. I can more easily skip through parts that are too grim and reread to pull together plot lines.
Several essays were interesting or entertaining but not worth worth much more than an hour skimming.
Reed recounts the story of renovating a home in New Orleans pre-Katrina through about the first year following Katrina. She is a bit of a name dropper, from wine to notable people, which can get old.
A novel about the transatlantic slave trade at the end of the 1700s. gripping and brutal. Historical aspects were the most interesting.
I simply loved this book until the final three chapters. Seemed rushed in pulling everything together when the development of the story and characters had been thoughtful until then. Such a disappoinment.
Quirky fun, fast read. Perhaps a little over the top in spots; Molly and Theo's take on The Gift of the Magi storyline for example. The irreverent take on the holidays was a refreshing interlude from more traditional fare.
Still thinking about this one. I have returned to chapters multiple times. Explains my religious views better than anything else I have encountered.
Everyone who spends a significant amount of time on the computer should at least read chapters 9 and 10.
Intriguing, inspiring. Just a good read about the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans from the eyes of a local columnist who lived it. Visiting for the first time at the end of the month and can't wait.
Really timely information. Everyone can have health insurance. Wasn't sure it was possible until I read this. Other countries do it and do it well. Certainly we should be able to figure this out. See Frontlines - Sick Around the World for a good overview of the info from the book.
Storyline so good through first three quarters but fell flat through the finish. 2.5 stars.
