I have been putting off finishing this book for a week now because I didn't want it to end without being able to grab the last book!
Never Fade had so much action, heartache, and courage between all the characters that it is hard to control all the feels I felt while reading this. The second book continues after Ruby has erased herself from Liam's mind. The reader gets to see how Ruby grows as a character and gains more experience.
It is nice to be inside her mind without all the distractions but you miss the group! When I finally had the time to sit down and finish the last half of this book today, I just flew through it. I was so into the book that I needed more by the time I was done. I cannot wait for the final book to come out. I recommend this book!
Fire and Flood by Victoria Scott has been added to my favorite book I have read this year. When I decided to pick this up, I got a lot of comparisons to The Hunger Games. Let me just say this now, it is nothing like that series. Just because it is a game where you need to survive doesn't make it like the Hunger Games at all. In this game, you really have no reason to kill anyone because you aren't killing to be the last person. This game is a RACE. It reminded me a lot of Rat Race where you are racing to win money but that doesn't mean you didn't get into a few fights along the way.
The main character, Tella, grows a lot during this book. When I first started it, I was kind of annoyed with how she acted and she was a little self-centered. I thought this world would be more focused on the issue at hand, which is the illness, but the illness wasn't a world known thing. Everyone went on with their normal lives and no one really knows about this race until you get the special blue box. During the race, Tella grows up and matures a lot. I really liked reading about how she can fend for herself and also how she cared for the people she was with. The story really did a 360 with how she saw herself but I assume that happens easily when you are put in this type of situation.
[ WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
When Tella found out about the race, I thought it was quite weird that she decided to just up and leave without letting her parents know. She drove across the country to get to a place where she would have to fight to win an egg. You find out that there are 4 different parts of the race where you are put into different atmospheres and need to survive to the next base. You can tell then and there that this is completely different from THG. When Tella starts the race, she is alone with her little egg that she has no idea what it does. She starts to fend for herself inside a huge jungle so she can get to a base and be shipped off to the other portion of the race. As time went on, she runs into a small group that she starts to befriend. Along with this group later, is this mysterious person named Guy.
Guy is a mysterious character that Tella has grown to see as interesting. He doesn't talk much but he knows so much about survival. Like he was training for this his whole life. Tella and Guy oddly enough become close as they spend their time in the jungle. They actually start to have feelings for each other. It was bound to happen but I really enjoyed how they acted around each other and also seeing Guy open up to her each chapter. Guy is someone that is there for himself but probably didn't expect to start to feel something for Tella or to care about the people in their group.
Lots of things happen throughout their time in the jungle but the group makes it to the base camp. Then they make their way to the desert and this is where a lot of action starts to happen between the main group and a competing group. In the competing group, there is a guy named Titus who has a fixation on winning and also taking down Tella at the same time. He sees her as a threat but it is more of a “join me and win or die” sort of situation. After the group has been traveling through the desert for a while, they are attacked by the other group and Tella is pretty much kidnapped. Titus starts to show his psycho side more and confesses to Tella about how he wants her. It is all very weird and he obviously needed some water to think straight. This portion of the book made me reading faster and flipping the pages as I read the action senses.
Now into the background of the race, Guy starts to tell Tella about how the race came to be and it was really interesting to read about. I enjoyed learning about the history of the race and how Guy wants to shut it down. It gave him a more deeper reason of being here and also why he is so prepared for this race since you aren't supposed to know anything about it. This makes Tella change her mind. She wants to win and ALSO help Guy shut down the race. This is where the book ends... with this lovely want of action.
Overall, I really loved this book. I can see this being a trilogy in the making because this book was two parts of the race. The next book should be the final two then have the winner announced. Then I bet the last one is Guy and Tella shutting down the system of the race from within. I cannot wait to read more about this series and I want more, now!
Let's just talk about how fantastic this book is and what a great idea it was. I think everyone on in a fandom should read this book.
Go on a journey with Cath as she tried to figure herself out through college, family problems, love, and finishing her fanfiction! Just reading the first page made me fall in love with this book. It was perfect in every way and how Rainbow Rowell ended it was a great conclusion for the Simon Snow fandom and for the Fangirl fandom!
I was upset that I didn't get to see what would happen next year.. I would love another book but I don't think that will happen. I will just have to read other Rainbow Rowell books so I can be emerged in her writing style. This book makes you laugh, cry, and wish it wasn't over. When I finished it, I went through the pages saying “WHY?! I NEED MORE!” I would definitely read this again and I am happy to say it is one of my favorite contemporary young adult books right now!
Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas was a really fun and interesting fantasy to read. It has so much potential to be an amazing series and I cannot wait to dive into the other books that are already out at the moment! I loved the first one about 200 pages in and decided to buy all of the other books.
Throne of Glass follows this kick-ass assassin named Celaena Sardothien who is currently a slave in a salt mine. One day she is taken away from her duties and brought to the Crowned Prince. He gives her a proposition to be set free in four years if she will become the King's Champion. This means that she will be his personal assassin for four years doing whatever he wants her to kill. She takes this deal but she will have to fight other contenders to become his champion.
Celaena has to deal with a lot of obstacles while she is at the King's palace. She is being watched by the Guard Captain and trained also. His name is Charol. I really enjoyed his character because he felt real and would understand Celaena. The other love interest is obviously the Crown Prince himself. There is sort of this love triangle of forbidden attraction because they all shouldn't like each other. The two boys obvious like Celaena over time but she has mixed feelings for both. I didn't really expect there to be a love interest in this fantasy story because I assumed it would focus more on the competition and mystery itself, but it was a nice touch.
I really enjoyed this book and Sarah J Maas' writing is really spectacular. I got really into each characters story. The writing is in third person though and I got confused at times who was talking because at some points they just switch over right after each other. That is no big deal though. I just needed to pay attention more.
Overall, I really enjoyed the first book in this series and I think it has a lot of potential. I am starting Crown of Midnight right now and am already enjoying Celaena journey again. I think any fantasy lover would enjoy this series but it has enough of everything for any type of person to enjoy it.. not just because it has Prince's and Kings makes it a full on fantasy. There is love, mystery, and hardship in this story.
I really wanted to love this book because it had great potential. I love accidentally married in Vegas books because they are always fun and spontaneous. You really get to see the characters work together to make their marriage work. Sadly, that was not the case with this book.
The Mistletoe Pact follows Evie and Dan when they are in their 20s and make a pact together that if they are still single during Evie's 30th birthday then they will get married. Well surprise! It happened but it was instant regret the next morning even though they have both been pining for each other since they made the pact.
I think it just felt too real? That seems weird to say but I read for something to happen to people that wouldn't happen normally. I did not feel a connection between the main characters. The back and forth became too much near the end. The slow burn was too slow. I did enjoy the ending though but it just felt too late.
This book could have been something special and I am sad it fell flat for me. Also, considering it is a Christmas book, it had no Christmas spirit. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was probably my least favorite out of the Dark Olympus series... now that doesn't mean it's bad. It felt like the entire subplot was build up for the next book and we didn't really get closure at the end.. Wicked Beauty follows Helen, Achilles and Patroclus in the trials for becoming the next Ares. The prize is to win Helen as their wife but Helen doesn't want to put her life into someone's hands so she takes matters into her own.
I enjoyed all three of our characters. Helen is badass and let's no man take advantage of her. She will now bow down to be married off to some stranger so she decides to create her own future. I admire her ambition and strength. She is often described by others as a spoiled princess living off the last Zues but there's so much more to her than others see.
Achilles and Patroclus are already in a relationship at the beginning of the book. Achilles is trying to win to become the next Ares and has Patroclus there to help him win. Their dynamic is interesting. Felt like a sub/dom relationship till Patroclus finally started to get a backbone. Helen fits well with them and I liked them all together. The sex scenes were good but I know Katee Robert can do better.
Now for the disappointing part... the ending. That's just it though. It just ended... we got no conclusion for the relationship. The main issue in Olympus was just talked about but we learned absolutely nothing about it. I'm assuming we will learn more in the next book but it just felt incomplete. I hope we do learn more in the next. This book just felt like a the hunger games.
Thank you NetGalley for gifting me this ARC in return for my honest review.
This is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith was a very cute contemporary book. It contains parts that are adorable, funny, and heartwarming. I give it about a 3.5-4/5 star rating.
This books follows the strange long distance friendship between two pen pals, Ellie and Graham. Ellie lives in the middle of no where Maine and Graham is a new teenage movie star in California. They have no idea who each other are. They accidentally started talking one day when Graham sent Ellie an e-mail but it was meant for his friend. This is how their friendship started.
Now, I think it went very quickly from their e-mails to meeting in person. It was about the second or third chapter. Graham is just like “What if we move our movie set to Maine?!” And then when he gets there, he immediately (kinda stalkerish) looks for her and ends up accidentally asking out her best friend that was wearing her shirt!
This book was very cute but they didn't have much of a “spark” connection. It just seems kind of between the lines type of romance where the readers has to imagine their spark instead of reading it. Which kind of sucks but I believed that they genially liked each other.
I really enjoyed the parts where they were talking though e-mail but it was kind of strange that they even used that when they were together. Why didn't they just text or call? The e-mails would go straight to their phone so it is sort of the same thing. I really enjoyed the part where it showed Ellie's saved drafts for e-mails she was going to send out.
Overall, this was a good decent contemporary read. I almost read the entire thing during my short work shift because it was easy to breeze through. I would recommend it to anyone though that likes contemporary books and cute little romances.
To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han is a young adult romance contemporary series that is very cute. Jenny Han did it again this this book and I enjoyed the story the whole time while reading it. It was a quick read and I cannot wait for the next book because what will it be about?
The main character, Lara Jean, writes a letter at the ending of liking or loving a boy and seals it inside of a hat box. One day she comes home from school and finds the hat box and letters missing. Then the next day at school, one of the boys she sent a letter to has confronted her and that is when she realizes that all five of the letters have been sent out to the boys she loved before (hence the title).
To get into the story some more, Lara Jean lives with her father and two sisters – Margot and Kitty. Margot is about to leave to study at a college abroad and decides to leave her boyfriend of two years, Josh, before she goes. Now Josh was one of Lara Jean's passed loves. She wrote him a letter and sealed it in the hat box. Now it was a little betraying even to Lara Jean that she liked Josh so that is why didn't act upon it and when she learned about him and Margot, she ended the crush right then and there. Which was good of her and a good sister of her. It wasn't until after they broke up that Lara Jean started to have feelings for him again.
[ WARNING THIS PART CONTAINS SPOILERS ]
Once the letters were sent out, Josh and Lara Jean's first kiss, Peter, confronted her about it. Peter is an arrogant popular student that is dating the most popular girl in school but they do break up at one point. Josh makes a big deal about the letter though because he liked her around the same time that she did and he wants to know why she didn't tell him. (That is simple... because he started dating her sister) Since Josh was making a big deal about the letter and her feelings, she decides to lie and say she has a boyfriend so it means nothing to her now even though she still likes him a bit. She lies and says Peter is her boyfriend.
Now Peter and his girlfriend, Gen, have broken up for the moment when Lara Jean tells Josh this and she goes over and kisses him in front of Josh. Lara Jean try's to play it off but Peter wants to use this to his advantage. Lara Jean wants to get away from Josh's feelings (possibly make him jealous) and Peter wants to make Gen jealous. They decide to fake date. Now at this point, everyone knows this is going to go badly and they will start to have feelings for each other. Which of course happens, but it is a very cute book and I really liked the friendship/relationship Lara Jean and Peter had together. The reader saw a nice side to Peter. He would pick her up every day and bring her to school. Even take her little sister Kitty sometimes and Kitty started to really like him also.
Lara Jean and Peter's fake relationship goes on the entire book pretty much. Everyone thinks it is a little weird that they are dating each other and at times seems non-realistic to people. Josh has been getting jealous of their relationship though and actually confessed to her and kissed her! A cute part was when she told Peter and he said, “No one kisses my girlfriend! I am going to hurt him!” This is when I knew Peter actually liked her. Lara and Peter finally confess their feelings to each other when they are on a school ski trip. They actually like each other. It was a very cute moment but of course Gen had to ruin it. She told everyone that Lara and Peter had sex so this tore them apart because he didn't really deny it according to Lara Jean. This hurt her and she was away from Peter. They finally get back together at the end and that is how it end. Now, what will the second book be about? Their relationship? I hope so because they are so cute.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a cute and fluffy read that went by quickly. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to read a cute book with a little love triangle. Jenny Han is a wonderful author and I can't wait to read more.
4.5 ⭐️Okay, where can I get myself a guy like Daniel? He had a golden retriever personality and I loved every second of it. This book was so cute and I always love a story where I am pulled in instantly but also drawn to the characters so much that I feel like I know them.
Part of Your World is about Alexis and Daniel. Two people that are polar opposites in every way but they come together so beautifully. I literally swooned when reading Daniel's POV. He was the sweetest and had a pure soul. I was thrown off by the age gap at first but mostly just because it was brought up so casual. 37 year old woman and a 28 year old man? How crazy! Kidding but it was refreshing to read.
They definitely had things in common though due to the fact that they both had legacies in their lives and they were assumed to continue on those legacies. Alexis' felt more like an obligation the become the chief at her family hospital where Daniel's was pure excitement to continue the legacy of being mayor.
I really enjoyed this book! I teared up at a few parts where I felt my own heart breaking for the main characters due to their differences and thinking they could not be together. I felt like the ending was brought together wonderfully. I am always a sucker for happy endings.
This book was given as an ARC by NetGalley for an honest review.
Written in Red by Anne Bishop was a really good urban fantasy shapeshifter read for adult fiction. I usually don't pick up adult fiction that often but I was in that mood to have something hook me into the story and I am glad this was it!
Written in Red follows a girl named Meg Corybn that has recently just escaped from where she was being caged and used against her will for her ability that lets her see visions of the future known as a cassandra sangue or blood prophet. This right away was very interesting to read about. My favorite part was when she finally her side of what it meant for her to be a blood prophet. Meg stumbles upon a little town that is pretty much surrounded by different shape shifters. I was mainly interesting in reading about the wolves. Simon Wolfgard owns a shop in the town and hires her as the new Liaison for the town. He can sense that she is keeping a secret but he gives her the job with a place to live. Lucky right for someone that just ran away and has no money?
I really loved the main character, Meg, in this story. She was a unique person to read and learn about as the book went on. I really loved that they described her kind as someone who ages but has the soul of a child. I believe that described her very well. My favorite part of the book is when I got to read in Megs point of view because I just loved how she thinks. Being in a new place and new environment was interesting enough to see her adjust. She did it well and quickly. Much quicker than I would if I just escaped somewhere I was caged in for my entire life. Meg is a kind hearted person and is willing to do whatever she can to be free.
Simon Wolfgard is a terra indigene that lives in a secluded area where humans are not allowed but runs a shop in town that surrounds around his kind. Humans can come and shop there and he also has a few human employees. Simon is a very interesting and strong main male character. In the beginning, he is very cold and rude. Controls the entire area of the creatures that follow him. Once Meg comes to town, she starts to confuse him and she really grows on him after a while to where he needs to protect her. He gets confused about why he feels angry when she gets hurt or is sad when she isn't happy. It was just a really cute way to read his growth in the human emotions. By the end of the story, you can tell that he possibly even loves Meg.
[ WARNING CONTAINS SPOILERS AND MY FEELS ]
When Simon leaves town for a week and has to take care of Sam, oh my God. I was just so engrossed into the two of them when they spent time together. Sam as a wolf puppy was very cute and as a reader you can tell that Meg was very good for Sam. When Elliot slaps Meg for putting Sam on a leach, this was a plot twist because Sam shifts back into a human for the first time since his mother died. I don't know how old Sam is, but I am assuming he is probably ten or so. I started to cry when he was defending Meg because he really loved her as a friend.
One of my favorite parts of the book is pretty much the ending. Where the people going after Meg tried to kidnap her and also Aria trying to take Sam. I loved all of the people that were looking out for Meg. Mainly Winter. She is amazing and I loved when she said that winter will not go away unless “our Meg” was okay. Simon was crazy during this part of the book also and we got to see that he was starting to care for her. He was wondering why he kept feeling so angry toward the people that put Meg in this position. Once everything was fine, it was cute when Simon was in wolf form and stealing all of Meg's dog cookies!
Overall, fantastic read. It took me a while to get into it but about 60 pages in I couldn't put it down. Read the rest in a few hours till 2am. It was great and I am going to pick up Murder of the Crow now!
I absolutely LOVED this contemporary romance novel! It was beautiful and written so well. It made me laugh and cry at times. The main character, Caymen, was perfectly sarcastic and it put me in sarcastic moods. I loved her personality, background, and humor. Everything she described was funny and very sarcastic. She is a very sarcastic character and you will fall in love with her wit.
When she met Xander, it was very humous how she viewed the rich and his actions. It made me laugh how he beckoned her. You could tell though that once he looked up from his own world and into hers, he was interested. I loved their chemistry and how they wanted to figure each other out. It gave me new ways to want to date. I wanted someone like him. To take me away and try to discover what makes me tick..
[ SPOILERS ]
Xander and Caymens relationship was so different than others. When Caymen found out about her grandparents at his mothers banquet, I was so shocked. I did not expect her mother to come from a very rich family! Once you met the grandparents though, it was perfect. Her sarcasm comes form her grandfather and it made me tear up a bit when he said that her knew she was his granddaughter. Everything with her mother made her seem so stubborn. I had no idea she hated the rich so deeply because of her family and where Caymens father came from. I expected us to meet her father at some point but I was happy that her mother gave her the chance at the hospital.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh and cry along this beautiful journey. I can't wait to read more of Kasie West's work!
I must say that Champion was a wonderful conclusion to this action packed, romance filled, and political read. This book had much more of a political side than any of the others. I think the way I described it was exactly how each book went individually. The first one was very action packed with all of the hardships that each character had to go through to become who they are. The second book had a lot of romance with June and Day. They even had other side romances that intertwined with Tess and the Elector. Then the third one was full of the hardships that the Republic is going through. This made politics become a big part of Champion.
[ WARNING THIS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
In Champion, Day and June are pretty much separated for most of the book. After Day found out that he is dying, he decided to let June take the job where she will be by the Elector's side most of the time. This would of made it difficult for them to see each other anyway. Day tries to forget about June and let her do her job.
This novel had much more of a political side. It was nice to see that history does pretty much repeat itself to a small extent in this book. When reading it, it reminded me a lot of the history that has happened in the past with the USA. It may not be as drastic but the same ways that they deal with issues like war have pretty much transferred over. I guess you wouldn't think much since that is how they are still solved today? You use what you know and the tactics that have been used in the past to write about.
As selfish and weird as it sounds, I would of liked more with June and the Elector. I like to see all of my options when it comes to the side romances. I think that both men would of been good for June but of course, Day is the superior one to choose due to emotions.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I devoured it in about 2 or 3 hours... making sure to read every detail still and understand everything that was being said. The ending was perfect. I really liked that Marie Lu let us know that June tried to make everything work without Day. She went on with her life for a decade before seeing him again. She tried to find a new love and make that work. She became who she was supposed to be. Therefore, Day and June could be together finally.
I would recommend this series to anyone! It was overall wonderful and covered so many aspects of the real world like poverty, romance, violence, politics, betrayal, death, murder, and more. Even though so much negativity happened during this series, the world was able to find that light and make everything come back together.
Its been a while where I find a book that makes me laugh out loud, feel butterflies and makes me want to tear up but somehow Mr. Wrong Number did that for me. The writing honestly had so much voice from the main characters. Oliva was full of life and spunk. She was sarcastic, clumsy and such a lovable character. I could feel her energy radiating off the pages and it made me want to keep reading.
When it comes to relationships, I die for playful banter and thrive for that in my own relationships so I loved reading a book where that comes into play. Oliva and Collin's enemies to lovers troupe was fun to read mostly because of their comebacks to each other. I love reading about two people that can tell each other to sod off then slowly start realizing that they are falling for each other. There was a good amount of the miscommunication troupe and it did get a bit annoying by the end but they figured it out.
Overall, this was a very cute and playful read. I read it in one sitting and I recommend it to anyone looking for a book that will make you laugh, wrinkle your nose and make your stomach flip a few times. Thank you to NetGalley for giving me an advance readers copy for my honest review.
Uninvited by Sophie Jordan was a very interesting book to read. It is about the government looking for people that have the “kill gene” and marking them as a carrier. This causes the humans with this gene to be an outcast to society and everyone treats them as killers even if they haven't done anything.
The main character, Davy, is a very talented young teenager from Texas. She goes to school, has a boyfriend who loves her, and is very talented when it comes to performing musically. Every so often, the students are tested for the kill gene. It turns out that Davy has the kill gene and cannot run away from her so called fate.
Once everyone finds out about Davy, her social circle goes against her. Her boyfriend becomes a jerk and just uses her at the end to try and have sex with her. Her best friend turned against her and calls her dangerous every chance she gets. It was very sad to see this happen to her because she seemed like such a nice person and she never caused harm to anyone in the past. So why was everyone so willing to turn against her? Because of this so called gene that she has.
I really wish we were giving the background behind the actual gene. There were some little side stories as you read along before each chapter but they never went into too much detail. Why did they look for this gene? How do they know specifically that it is a kill gene? Is it just a hoax like Davy's brother seems it to be? Making people seem as if they are something to be afraid of causes them to act out. They feel like they were given this opportunity to do something because they feel like they are dangerous. This causes a few teens to go out there and kill hundreds of people.
Davy has to transfer to a new school since she was “uninvited” from her old one. She is forced into a room with a few other students that have this kill gene. They do not learn much but are put in the room like a cage. This is where she meets a few friends like Gil and Sean.
[ WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
Davy starts to become sort of friends with Sean. They have this sexual tension between them every time he needs to save her or look out for her. Davy ended up going to a party with her boyfriend and broke up with him once she found out he just wanted to have sex with her. That she should be happy someone still wants her in her “state”. This causes her to become up set and slap him. Then she calls Sean to come pick her up because it is almost curfew and she could get imprinted for that.
Davy's former best friend, Tori, goes to the government to tell them that Davy hurt her boyfriend and she is dangerous to society. Which I thought was silly, so what that she slapped him? Does no one else get upset and slap people? It wasn't like she killed him. But this caused Davy to be imprinted. This scene was really sad and it made me feel like Davy was being somewhat raped/stricken of her innocence. She was taken away from her home without her parents permission to be branded for life.
As time goes on, the kill gene people were taken into detention camps and also training camps. Only the most promising people would be chosen for the training camp. Davy, Gil, and Sean were picked from the people we knew about. The training camp was used so they were useful to the society and would fight for their government. They needed to learn how to “control” their anger and need to kill. Everyone that was scary got like that because the government treated them like they were killers already. It caused more trouble in my opinion than helping the world.
A traumatic scene is when one of the trainers practically forces Davy to chose between Sean being killed and killing a teenager that has acted out. She ended up killing the teenager boy before the guy got a chance to kill Sean. It was a sad scene because she has now killed. She has become what they wanted of her.
Sean and Gil have been planning to break out of the camp and they plan on taking Davy with them. This went by really quickly in the book. A couple chapters before Sean is telling this to Davy then a few later they are gone. I thought it would be sketchy and that the person Gil found to help them escape would turn against them and get them in more trouble. Davy decides to take her friend, Sabine, with them. They all escape and that is pretty much how the first book ends.
Overall, this was a good book. Most likely a 3.5-4/5 stars. It was a very quick read. I read it in about 2.5 or 3 hours. I read it in one sitting before I went to bed. Its was good and I want to read about Sean and Davy in the next book.
After reading An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, I can see what all the hype was about. That was a damn good book and it kept you entertained throughout the entire novel. All 446 of those beautifully written pages were full of sorrow, hate, adventure, love, and more importantly... politics. That's right. Pretty much this entire book is about the politics between the Empire and the people inside of it.
This book has a lot of things I love mixed into it. Hardship is one. Almost every character has some type of hardship attached to them. For our two main characters, Laia and Elias, they seem to have it hard. Laia has just recently lost everyone in her life but her brother, but he has also been sent to prison and she is trying to get him out. Elias is the son of the Commandant and is graduating soon from Blackcliff Academy where he has been trained since he was a child to become a solider/assassin pretty much. Another hardship is for the oppressed nation itself. There are slaves, poor families, people are starving, women are getting raped. It is a huge problem and it seems to be the way of life for most people. It really just depends which family you are born into to seal your fate in the world.
Laia is our first main character. She has lost her family and is trying to get back the one person she has left, her brother. This has caused her to look toward the Resistance and go undercover as a slave at Blackcliff Academy to get information. Laia goes through tremendous character development, which I loved. In the beginning, she was this shy and very unsure of herself character. She was weak and couldn't take care of herself. The only thing keeping her going is to rescue her brother from prison. By the end of the novel, you see a huge development in who she is and how she handles herself.
For our second main character, Elias. He was brought to Blackcliff Academy as a child to be trained as a solider. In the book, he is days away from graduating and is willing to flee the area to finally be free. But, he has been named to be in the running as the next Emperor along with three other students. This makes him do tasks (or trials) that will test him as a person. Will he be strong enough to become the next Emperor? Or will he fail? I really enjoyed his character because he was willing to go against the Empire.. but for selfish reasons. Sometimes in these type of worlds, you have to be selfish and not be there to save the world. He grew a lot as a person throughout the novel though and for the better. I cannot wait to see the adventures he goes on in the next book.
This book kept you on your toes and there were so many twists that you never knew what would happen. The best books are always the ones that aren't predictable. They are the ones that stay with you for years to come and make you love them. For this book, it has been added to one of my favorite books this year. I cannot wait for the sequel to come because that ending was amazing. With the last paragraph, I was already picturing the next journey I would go on with these characters.
Overall, this was a beautiful and heart wrenching story. There are so many things that will make you love it and hate it at the same time. You will get involved with the characters and hope the best for them. Root for the underdog and pray for them to become the hero. This book is also addicting. I read half of it in one sitting. There is so much to read and learn that you won't want to race through it, even though it seems like you could. I would recommend this book to anyone. Literally everyone should read it because it is full of things I think you would love. There is a place for everyone.
The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings has been on my most anticipated read of 2014. I had really high hopes for her first book and I was not disappointed! I truly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It is a good YA dystopian novel with a love interest.
This book was interesting to read because it is in duel prospective. I really enjoyed that because lately I haven't found any books with duel prospectives. It is always the best for books with duel prospectives to be on characters that are in the love interest. As the reader, you get to experience both sides of the story and see how each person feels. That is a good thing to have in a book for me.
The main girl character, Meadow, is kick-ass and I really enjoyed reading about her character. She has a strong background with a strict father that is looking out for her. She has a brother and sister that are lovely and she would do anything for them. I really enjoyed the Meadow and Peri interaction in the beginning of the novel because it is always nice to have someone in a messed up world that is still “innocent”.
The main guy character, Zephyr, is a normal guy that is living in a different part of town but occasionally dreams about a silver haired girl. We find out a lot about him throughout the book. Who he is and his background.
This book had a lot of action and twists that I did not see coming but also did. The main thing was who Zephyr was. I knew he was different but as the reader we didn't know a lot about the background of the “government” for this novel. That was interesting to read about and learn as Zephyr did also.
This world was a dystopian era with a hugely messed up world but it was different that some other worlds that I have read about. This world has a lot of murder and each person will murder if they have to. That was a big difference in the world now and this world. They barely gave it a second glance.. it was just KILL THAT PERSON THERE! That is what makes this book great because it is so different than how the world is today but it isn't far fetch if this was to happen.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I have been waiting to read it since I have been following Lindsay Cummings on the journey with her as I am one of her booknerdigans! I cannot wait for the second one! And also to pick up her other series that will release soon. I would recommend picking this up if you enjoy a good YA dystopian novel with a nice love interest involvement!
Alienated by Melissa Landers was a really interesting and cute book. I loved how to created the planet, L'eihr, because it seemed realistic on what may happen in the future. The story can be a bit predictable but it was cute and I really enjoyed it. This book is an easy read and will have you hooked in by the very first chapter.
Alienated is about a girl named Cara whose family hosts a L'eihr in their home as an exchange student. Awesome, right? Who wouldn't want their own alien living with them and able to learn about their planet? Cara seems to be someone who was a little skeptical but wasn't against the idea of the L'eihr merging into society. He own brother was sent in her place to their home planet and she stayed taking care of her exchange student, Aelyx.
[ WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
The reader learns that Aelyx and the other exchange students are going to try to get false records of Earth's planet so The Way does not want to become an alliance with the humans. They do not want to become buddy buddy with the humans and it is easy to say that some of the humans don't either. This is obvious though considering the past with humans and change. Even in the real world, we have had to deal with segregation between all races and to think what it would be like if aliens come to our planet? It is obvious this exact reaction would happen but I wish it wouldn't.
I really liked Cara and Aelyx's friendship and I liked to watch it grow. It wasn't fast and the love connection didn't happen till about 3/4 into the book it was fine. I really liked learning about his planet and how advanced they were. It was difficult reading about Cara's best friend, Tori, and how she turned on her... also her boyfriend, Eric, did too. They joined a group called HALO that are against the alien's coming down to Earth.
The L'eihr seem to be very interesting and a kind species considering they have done peace offerings before like curing cancer and sickness from Earth. You'd think Earth would see this as a peace offering but a lot of citizens were against it an still didn't believe it.
The sad part was seeing one of the exchange students, Eron, getting killed off. I was shocked to see that part and it happened so quickly. The author barely wrote about it when it happened but near the end of the book she elaborated more on who he was as a person. I really liked him as a character.
Cara and Aelyx are pretty much on the run once a big mob of people show up at their house and want to kill her family for hosting him. They decided to go to his hidden ship and fly to his planet to save themselves. There is trouble when some of the kids that don't like Cara anymore find her and almost kill both of them. BUT Eric and Tori save them and they are able to get to Aelyx's planet. This is where The Way learns about his plan to contaminate the results of Earth's gatherings that he had to bring back. Cara finds out and she is pissed! She gets in a fight with him then he gets some bad lashes on his back for breaking a law.
At the end of the book, the readers learn that Aelyx must go back to Earth and fix his mistake. He needs to get the humans to agree to an alliance and change their minds about their planet. The catch is that Cara has to stay there.... they will be apart for a while and that is the sad part. It has a nice ending and I hope believe there is a second book. Cannot wait!
The entire time I was reading this book, it felt familiar. I don't know why.. it could of been that I have read it before or a book like it. Overall, it was a wonderful book. It was a little predictable. I wish the book had more of a background in it. How did he get like this? Why? I wish he looked more into it but I understand he just wanted to live day by day with Rhiannon.
[SPOILER]
I knew when things would happen and that he would eventually get into the body of Rhiannon. I was reading it life by life hoping that he would find himself or there would be a glitch so he would be in one body. I did not like the ending because it was just like a “REALLY?” ending. You want A to be happy. Somehow find himself.
It was a really good book though. Wasn't like many other books. I think I have only read one other book that was like this; hence the familiarity. (But in that book the person only woke up in one body the whole time) I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy read with a lot of emotion.
Through the Ever Night by Veronica Rossi was a good sequel. The book picks up where we last left, Aria is also in the woods after going back to talk to Hess. She has decided to make a deal with him that if she finds the Still Blue then she can have Talon. Although, a deal with the devil has to backfire right?
Already into the second chapter, Aria is back with Perry. It is harder for them this time though because he is now the Blood Lord of the Tides and it is no secret that his tribe will not welcome her with open arms. Aria is still a Dweller and even though she is half... it doesn't mean much.
[WARNING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS}
Perry doesn't seem to care about what his people think and takes her into his care. He wants to get her marked so she can be a respectable person in his tribe and it will also make her stronger in the outside world. This backfires and someone ends up poisoning the ink that is used on Aria! She almost dies at the hand of one of Perry's people! Perry and Aria were supposed to go together to find the Still Blue but she knows he cannot leave his tribe. So Roar and Aria sneak out early in the morning without him. Perry feels hurt and betrayed because he was supposed to go to but over the course of the book, the reader starts to see that was a good idea for him to stay there.
As Aria and Roar are traveling, they find Sable's tribe because they know Liv is going to be there. But WHAT? Liv is going to marry Sable as she was supposed to? But what about Roar? Well it turns out that Liv was doing this so Perry's tribe could have money because it seems like Sable's tribe has a lot of people and resources. But, love can overtake a contract and Liv wants to be with Roar. She cannot resist him while he is under her nose. This causes problems.
Sable wants to talk to Hess because they will make a plan to go into the Still Blue. (ha ha) This seems sketchy at this point because Sable TAKES Aria's Smarteye. That is when I knew it was bad because, of course, she would record the meeting they encountered. It turns out Sable is a bad guy and is willing to work with Hess to get into the Still Blue for his people only. When trying to get away from him, Sable ends up killing Liv. Which was very sad.. poor Roar.
While at Perry's tribe, Kirra is getting very close to him and they end up kissing! I was so madddd. Why did Perry start to doubt Aria and think she ran off with Roar romantically? Made no sense but she only wanted Cinder and she got him!
Cinder is the only person that can most likely break though the very thick wall between the Still Blue and where everyone else lives. Without him... it may not happen.
Really good sequel! I cannot wait to start Into the Still Blue the next few days! Definitely recommend this series.
I can't breathe because of the intensity, anxiety, and excitement this book gave me. There was so much new information between all of the characters and I am so happy with how of their backgrounds were wrapped up. This is a series where I was never disappointed with how everything happened. Everything happened exactly how I wanted it! Tahereh made me feel anxious this entire last book. I was frantically flying through the pages as I read what was happening.

In Ignite Me, the stories continues where it left off with Juliette and Warner's “relationship”. I really loved the chemistry these two characters had together. I wanted to read more and see their love bloom. I wanted to finally see them confess to each other, explore their backgrounds, and break down those barriers that obviously both of them have.
Juliette is with Warner in his house right after she was shot and saved by the twins. He is watching over her and caring for her as she recovers. Juliette starts to learn new things about Warner and also that everything he did to her was on purpose! He did it so she would actually feel and react for once in her life. The readers will start to fall for him also and realize that he isn't a bad guy. The sad thing is though that Juliette learns that everyone is dead at Omega Point. She cannot fathom what has happened and what Anderson has done. She must see it for herself to believe.
This is how she gets to see the survivors and come up with a plan. She wants to take down Anderson and take over his army. She wants to be free of this burden and she will need her friends for this. But there there is Adam. Oh Adam, I felt so sorry for you the most of this book. The sadness and betrayal that you felt must of been horrible. I loved Adam and Juliette's relationship in the beginning but you can tell he didn't want the new her. The strong and independent Juliette that wasn't going to sit back and just let the world rot away because she has a boyfriend.
Everything happens so quickly near the end of the book. Everything is getting put together and they are getting ready for their fight. Juliette and Warner have finally decided to be together and I couldn't of been happier. They have so much passion and love for each other. It is strong and they both understand how each person feels. The most amazing thing was probably when Juliette found him in his house after his mother died. How he felt so small and innocent as she helped him through that difficult time made him feel more like a human being. I was so heartbroken. I love Warners character and everything he stands for. He is so misunderstood and so smart when it comes to tactics. He made sure everyone feared him so he could live. All the hurt his father did to him will be claimed and taken away by Juliette.
This final book was amazing! I loved every second of it and I was upset when I couldn't just sit in my room and read it. I could of read it in one sitting like I did with Unravel Me. I need more but also I don't because Tahereh ends it with such grace. It all comes together and you feel complete. It isn't a raging ending or a hurtful one. You will feel complete once it is over and that is all a reader can ask of an author.
I finished this book in four hours. I could not put it down after finishing Shatter Me a few hours before. I had to know what was going to happen next and how it was going to happen.
[ WANRING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
Unravel Me starts with Juliette where she was after we left off. She is still confused, hurt, and alone in this new area. The readers get to know more about Castle's system and how it works. Half of the area is for people that have special abilities. Everyone knows they are not alone but Juliette is still different. She is dangerous. She is scary. People do not know how to react to her and if she will go off. She isn't trying to make friends and is in her own little world. There are many things that go wrong for Juliette; one is Adam. Adam is hiding something from her. After Castle made a point to think that he has a gift, Adam has been distant. This makes Juliette very upset and takes things to a drastic extreme.
The readers are introduced to a different side of Kenji. You get to see how smart he is and how observant his character is. Juliette and Kenji have a moment where he makes her understand that there is something more than just her pitty problems. There is a war going on and they need her. She can't just sit in her room and do nothing but wallow about her ruined love.
In this book, you get to know more about Warner and his love for Juliette. I must say, I fell in love with Warner myself by the middle of the book. You get to experience and feel his love for her. It was powerful and it made my stomach do little tiny flips. I adore how Tahereh wrote his character and how hurt he is; just like Juliette. I felt more of a connection with Warner than I did with Adam. There seems to be a spark between him and Juliette that I need to explore more.
Ignite me is next to read! I cannot wait to see how this story will unfold but I am also sad it will be coming to an end! I would recommend this series to anyone that enjoys a little bit of everything.
World After by Susan Ee was a good sequel. The second book was a lot more focused on the fighting aspect than the relationship between Raffe and Penryn. Raffe still thinks that she is dead and he is going around fighting a lot of demons.
The war seems to be more of a fight between the angels and the demons in this book than with the humans. The humans seem to be useful toward the demons and turning them into monsters and their own personal slaves... just like Paige. It was sad seeing Paige as a monster and reading about her needing flesh from humans to survive.
[ MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
Penryn and her family end up together in the beginning of the book but then get separated again. She spends her time going around trying to save her mother and sister. It was depressing that 2/3 into the book; Penryn and Raffe have still not found each other. They are finally reunited far into the book and Raffe seems to be really happy she is alive. You can tell away from her that he wants her but once they're together, he seems put off. I wish the book was full more of their relationship and friendship.
Overall, it was a good book. If you like the war aspect more than relationships then this is a good read. I still want to know what happens so I will most likely be picking up the 3rd book later this year... then the rest.
★★★☆☆ (2.5/5)
Only Everything follows three different points of views throughout the entire book; Eros/True, Charlie, and Katrina. Eros is the daughter of love that has fallen for a mortal and banished to Earth to make 3 couples fall in love so she can have her love of her life back, Orion. Charlie is a new kid that has a father that is focused around football. Charlie feels out of place at every school but now he is actually fitting in! Katrina is someone who just picked her self up again after losing her father but still has to deal with her abusive/arrogant boyfriend and distant mother.
Only Everything was a little cringe worthy and the writing wasn't the best out there. The author's writing was kind of childish and the way the characters acted were childish. The main character, True, was very distant from how humans felt. You would think that “cupid” would know how to make people fall in love but she was just throwing people together in the beginning and after an hour said they “loved” each other. Her personality was just unrealistic. I understand that the author wanted her to learn a lesson about how love really is and also to learn how to be considerate toward people on Earth but she was just too stupid when it came to how people actually felt.
I think the only character I really liked reading about was Katrina. She was a hurt teenager that would express her feelings through her writing and now to other people. She did have some annoying things about her, like her boyfriend Ty, but for the most part I really enjoyed reading about her.
Throughout the entire book, it felt like the author didn't understand teenagers. I was enjoying it for the most part until around 3/4 into the book. Charlie is someone that plays drums really well and ends up in a band. Most of the people around him were like, “Charlie that is so uncool! Everyone is going to think you're lame! Ew!” My reaction was pretty much, “wtf are you talking about?! Drummers are hot.” It felt like the author didn't understand or didn't care about how teenagers act in the real world.
The rest of the book was decent. The ending was obviously going to happen because True had to set someone up with each other. That was the entire point of the book. Now the next two are going to be centered around another couple. I probably won't pick it up. There was a chapter of the next book that did make me sort of curious of what is going to happen in the next book, but not really. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone unless it sounds interesting to them. I just didn't enjoy the writing and is seemed childish.
In Day of Blood and Starlight, the readers are returned with Karou after she has learned that everyone in her world is dead. Everyone she loved and spent time with are gone. She is not with Akiva and she does not want to be with him. She is upset.
[ MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ]
Karou is running around in different places trying to figure out what to do next. She is doing small jobs like Brimstone would of done and stealing teeth. People from the main land are starting to notice her. After some time, she finds Thiago again.. He is making his own army to fight the angels. He notices who Karou is and he wants her on his side. She accepts and stays there.
During this book, I was kind of bored. Things were happening but they weren't catching my attention. Mik and Z are being really cute during this entire book. My favorite part is in the beginning when she wants Mik to pee into a balloon to dump onto Karou's ex-boyfriend because he is talking to the press about her. Over time, they find Karou and follow her to where she is staying.
This book is mainly about the war that is going all. That is all. People die and people get saved. There isn't much romance.. just learning about the worlds Laini Taylor created and how to fix them.
Something I thought was really cool was that Karou could save people. She could recreate bodies and put their souls into them. That is awesome! I loved how she saved Issa because she really needed someone else that was on her side. I was hoping she would find and recreate Brimstone by the end of this book.
I do recommend this series. It is very interesting and the worlds are so different. I cannot wait for the third book to be dropped onto my doorstep April 8th!
