I really got into this book and quite enjoyed it. My main complaint was that the secret payoff wasn't quite enough to justify the build-up. Not that it was bad - the secret just wouldn't (IMO) justify the lengths that were taken to keep it secret.

I really enjoyed this book! I had read some of the stories already via her Patreon, and she wove these existing stories together with new ones in a way that built up a sense o that these were snapshots into a much larger world. Highly recommended!

I like Scalzi's style and characters in general, and this book was no exception. My issues were with the villains, specifically that they seemed both incompetent and yet managed to get their way almost despite themselves. Does Deus Ex Machina apply to villains? It appeared to in this story, and it pulled me out of the plot.

I'm still on board for the next book, tho. Hopefully the villains' actions make a little more sense.

I really enjoyed the recasting of the villains of the Cthulhu mythos as the protagonists in this book, and the the story felt quite authentic and real. That said, I didn't quite click with the story, but I think that's just a preference on my part - that's no knock on the book. Well written, well told story.

Well written, imaginative, great merged of a fairy tale setting and the real world. Not really my thing taste-wise, but I can appreciate its quality.

Some interesting ideas in this book, but it just didn't gel for me. Ended up fading and just skimming the last 20% or so of the book.
