'Tis the season
I'm a sucker for romance stories and this one was the expected emotional roller coaster with tissues needed. Love the characters and the story. A fantastic Christmas read.
Edited to add: after a bit of research, I discovered the author didn't do theirs. I can't remember what phase the moon was in at the time of the time travel but it was neither a blood moon nor a lunar eclipse in December 1903. Even in a fictional story set in the real world, these things must be consistent.
Unexpected find
M/M stories are something I've recently gotten into over the past couple of years and have been enjoying them immensely. This is the first I've read from this author and I enjoyed it. I love the characters and the storyline and the D&D scene. For me, this was an emotional roller coaster and left me wanting to read more with this pair.
Four stories...
I'd bought the paperback years ago and bought the ebook for convenience, and had bought them both for the fourth story. While I enjoyed all the stories, the second one didn't grab me as intensely as the other three.
The biggest disappointment is that the cover of the ebook doesn't match the paperback. Self-published authors are badly criticised if they do such things and publishing houses shouldn't be allowed to get away with it either.
The Untamed One
Love the story, 5 stars for it.
However, it receives three for the following:
1: a basic cover that isn't the same as the paperback.
2: errors that need better proofing.
3: the nasty example of price gouging when it wouldn't have cost them much at all since they used the manuscript from the paperback.
These things crucify a self-publishing author and publishing houses need to be held to the same accountability.
Dear reader, if these issues don't bother you then buy the book as it is a good read.
The Cursed One
The story receives 5 stars from me but other things force me to only give it 3. I own the paperback and bought the ebook for travelling convenience; I so love the story. However, the publishing house ruined it with the following:
1: a bland cover that is not the same as the paperback.
2: errors that need better proofreading or whatever the process is. It's like they used the paperback manuscript as is without proper ebook preparation, as well.
3: the ridiculously high price of an ebook when the manuscript already existed and the fact that the ebook costs so little to publish. Selling this for 5AU$ would still bring them a profit.
A self-published author would be, and has been, crucified for such things.
Dear reader, while the story is fantastic, it is up to you to decide if those issues are worth it.
The Dark One
The story gets 5 stars; I just love it. I own this as a paperback but bought the Ebook for convenience. However, I rate this 3 stars due to the following:
1: pathetic front cover compared to the paperback.
2: the lack of proper proofreading; regardless of whether they used the published paperback manuscript or not.
And 3: the stupidly high price. Just because it can be set that high, doesn't mean it should. I mean, the ebook is almost the same price as the paperback when it doesn't cost anywhere near a paperback to publish.
These points would instantly crucify a self-publishing author, so a publishing house shouldn't be allowed to get away with it either.
Dear future reader, if you can tolerate those three points, then get the ebook as the story is enjoyable. Otherwise, it's not worth the high cost.
Unleashed
I so enjoyed this. I've been a fan of this author ever since my husband came home with a copy of A Girl's Guide to Vampires. What I love about this one is how it reminds me of the author's earlier works with its sassy strong female. For me, this was closer to her first Dark Ones novel with the antics and just cracking me up.
The future
No one knows what our future will be like but robotics keep advancing. Parts of this story reminded me of I Robot (I've only seen the movie). Despite a couple of errors, this was an excellent read and I couldn't get enough of it. I am an emotional reader and I ugly cried despite suspecting the outcome. In spite of racing to the end, I didn't want it to. I so loved this story.
The spinoff
What an awesome read and addition to the Widdershins universe. I love the new characters and the older ones from the Whyborne and Griffin series. Despite the time that has passed between Deosil and Unhallowed, it's like I never left. Mr Hawk has hooked me with another of his series and I look forward to the next book!
