Toast
I wish I could erase my mind and read this again. I love a creepy winter scene. Add a dilapidated highland church? Immaculate. I did figure out the twist before the book told me, but it was a proud moment not a sigh of predictability. This is my first book by Feeney, but it definitely won't be my last.
I went into this book prepared to torture my thalassophobia and claustrophobia. Instead, I was just subjected to a guy dealing with major “my daddy didn't love me” daddy issues. I have enough of my own daddy issues to deal with, thank you very much. The only tension I felt was seeing how much oxygen the guy had left at the top of each chapter...I think if I want that thrill again, I'll just hold my breath next time I'm in a pool. The pacing was so weird. It took half the book to get into the whale and then everything after that felt so rushed. The best I can give this is meh.
I heard such great things about this book and was excited to pick it up. And it started quite strong, had some neat and creepy moments. But like others have said, it became an absolute CHORE to read around the 65% mark. Much longer than it needed to be and so many repetitive moments that were annoying to have to reread. It kept feeling like I should've have made it to the end only to be reminded that there were still 200 more pages of story. And the ending was disappointingly predictable. Some books, you see where it's going and feel a sense of accomplishment when you are right. This was just a sigh of “Yeah...that's what I thought.”
OH MY GOD! This book was AMAZING! It was creepy and beautiful and everything I could ever want! I tore through it in one sitting, I wouldn't even put it down to talk to a friend.
The Nesting Place has to be my favorite of the collection of stories.
Every story sent chills down my spine.
And every page was beautiful. How she can make such scary creatures both horrifying and magnificent is a testament to her skill.
I am going to FORCE every one of my friends to read this book.
I definitely identify with the main character, Neil. I had to deal with a very similar situation with the Harry Potter series when I was a kid in private school. Luckily, we had a very passionate librarian as well. I found Neil's musical education an odd addition to the story, but that's just me I suppose. I wish there had been a little more of a story between Neil and that cute girl in his class, the one who made all her dresses (I can't remember her name). And I would've LOVED to see more about Danny, but I understand that he was a secondary character.
All in all, I enjoyed it, like revisiting a part of my past.
This volume was all back story for the Ishbalan war. It was informative without being too detailed and gave me more details about some people I'd wanted to know about, mostly the Doctors Rockbell. That story arc broke my heart. You also got to see how crazy Kimblee really is, and, hoo boy, there are some bats in that belfry. You also get some nice back story on Mustang and Hughes, and I loved seeing Hughes again, I cried like a baby when he was killed.
A very exciting volume, read it in one sitting.
This was a pretty interesting story. I would've like to have had a little more back story for the present day main character, Tara. Did her house burn down by accident? Or was it some creepy incident linked to the mines or Asa Curry? And I would've like to hear about her mother more.
The switching back and forth from past to present was cool. And the main characters, Tara (present day) and Josephine (past) were very likeable.
All in all, a good book. Middle of the pack of graphic novels I've read so far.
This was a fun read. It still looks like classic O'Malley, but I definitely like the art in this book more than Scott Pilgrim. The story was interesting, one to which most of us can relate. Everyone wants that second chance, wishes they'd said/not said that one thing that would have changed everything. The main character, Katie, gets MANY of these chances in the form of an odd little mushroom and a quick summary of her mistake.
But like any story of someone messing with time, everything goes pear shaped. Katie gets greedy with her “revisions”, and...well, she kind of breaks time. Best way I can put it, I suppose.
The ending feels kind of rushed and predictable, but it's still a fun story and it's easy on the eyes.

The art is very nice, I would read anything if was illustrated by her. But the story flows awkwardly and ends like they were running out of pages and had to wrap it up fast. And then there were a few things that were never really explained. It felt like the graphic novel equivalent of Lost, more questions than answers. Still, all in all, an okay read, nice to look at at, and I would recommend it to my friends.
