I thought this was great. I love folklore and fairytales. The Scottish folklore vibes are fantastic. It's very atmospheric. I enjoyed the clan dynamic.
The magic is interesting. It can be woven in plaids and worked into weapons. I also loved the part the elements played in this. How the wind can carry secrets, and if you call for someone the wind will carry your call.
I wish I had the next book in my hands right now!
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the e-arc.
This really surprised me. It is so outside my comfort zone, but something about the blurb just intrigued me.
Chelsea's husband is a jerk. Everything has to be his way. Especially when he's been drinking. It's one thing to treat her bad, but she's starting to worry about her daughters. What if they make him mad? She has to leave. But she has nowhere to go. Her husband has made sure she has no friends, only him. Her mom is too busy with all of her rich friends and vacations. What can she do?
There have been some crazy news stories about this new disease called the Violence. Apparently people just go nuts and beat other people to death. Could this be Chelsea's way out?
This is a story about generations of abuse. Whether it's physical or mental, it's abuse. It's a story about ending the cycle. It's about the differences between the rich and the poor. It's about a horrible government. So many different things are addressed in this book.
My thoughts on this book changed so many times. But I found myself completely invested in the characters. I thought it was great.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher.
I thought this started off really good. I enjoyed the magic and the world. The characters were great.
Sadly, it just kept going downhill from there. The lust everyone felt for Shade, and her wishy-washy feelings just ruined the story for me. If all of that garbage had been left out, it would've gotten a high rating. Honestly, had this not been a review copy, I would have added it to the dnf pile. I'm really disappointed, because it started off so good!
I received a copy from Net Galley.
I'm so happy to be back in the Rainwilds! That being said, this was my least favorite Hobb book so far. It just gets 4 stars instead of 5. Still fantastic, but I just didn't love it as much as the others. The ending made me want to dive right into the next one! As always, Robin Hobb is the queen of creating characters that I love to hate.
After Fellian's parents were killed by Liberationists, she was forced to be an indentured servant mage. She is a Lamplighter. She can create light.
Five years after she was taken, some Monarchists show up with an offer she can't refuse. Travel papers, money, and freedom if she helps them.
I'm not usually a big fan of novellas, but this one is great. I still wish it was a full length novel, but it is well done. The magic system is great, and I loved the characters. This is my first time reading anything by Kate Elliott, but definitely not my last.
Thank you to Net Galley for this copy.
This is my second time reading this, and I loved it just as much as the first time!
Thank you to Net Galley and Orbit for the e-arc.
This story follows three siblings and their separate paths to make their Mother and their Guild proud. They are Hawkspurs. The Guilds control industry and the Hawkspur Guild is one of the most powerful.
Conall is the heir. He is sent to prove himself in the military.
Tyreta can control pyrestones. Pyrestones are used to power the machines. She is sent off to learn more about how pyrestones are harvested.
Fulren is the youngest. He is busy inventing new things for his uncle the Emperor. He's an artificer that secretly wishes to be a fighter.
All of this seems pretty mundane, until it isn't.
The Hawkspurs will have to prove themselves worthy in ways they never could've imagined.
This book is fantastic! So much political intrigue! I loved these characters so much. Everything about this book is amazing. I can't wait for the next one.
I had never even considered getting this book until I heard someone talking about it on booktube. I thought it was just a silly romance and not for me. Then I saw that video, and there are mages and magic and I was intrigued.
Yes, there is a bit of romance, but I didn't feel like it took away from the story.
I listened to the audiobook and it is fantastic! I had so much fun listening to this.
I will definitely listen to the rest of the series.
3.5 stars
Ever since her mothers' death, Sena has wanted nothing more than to get off her frozen planet. She makes her living as a thief. As soon as she gets enough money, she will leave.
Unfortunately, she crosses the wrong person and must bargain for her survival.
This is a survival story, a found family story, and an adventure story.
I thought this was pretty good. It's very fast paced and I loved the characters. Hopefully there will be another book about Sena and Iska.
I received a copy from Net Galley.
Whimsical and wintry. Perfect for this time of year.
Marietta dreams of being a ballerina. While her parents indulge her by letting her take ballet lessons, they would never allow her to actually become a ballerina. It would mar the family name. She is to marry for for wealth and status. That is her duty.
When she first meets Dr. Drosselmeier, she is fascinated by his inventions. They are magical. Until she realizes his magic is of the dark sort.
This is a magical retelling of the Nutcracker. I really enjoyed the characters. Especially the friendships.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an early copy.
This is such a fun book! It has the perfect mixture of action and humor with a little fantasy sprinkled on top.
Scarlett is an outlaw. She's on the run from her latest heist when she comes across an accident. That's how she meets Albert. He is the only survivor. Against her better judgement, she agrees to help him find the next town. Then they will part ways.
The people after them have different ideas. Scarlett is starting to wonder if they are after her or Albert.
These characters are great. Scarlett is sarcastic and funny, and Albert sees the good in everything, so people think he's an idiot. They make an interesting pair. Hopefully there will be more of these books because I have questions about Scarlett's past and just because this was so enjoyable.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher.
