I keep telling people to read Krueger's Cork O'Connor series. The depth he gives his characters is like no other author I know. You will love them, especially Henry, and grow to care about the town of Aurora, which is in the setting of Tamarack County, Minnesota. He is a master storyteller and you will be drawn into the life of his characters and their community.
I give this book 2 1/2 stars The story is very relevant with what is going on in our world with racial issues, but I feel it could have delved into it a bit more and on a deeper level. The main character, Emira, did go through a transformation (slowly) that was nice to see. However, I don't think the white characters changed at all, maybe that is relevant at this time, too. I don't understand what the BIG hype was to read this book, though.
Have you ever hugged a book when you finished it? I loved this story! The characters are delightful, and the small town family community made me want to move to Dove Pond. As I was finishing this book my heart felt lighter. If you want to fall in love with characters and feel the magic of hope, this is the book!
I've never read this much of the Old Testament before. I wasn't expecting to learn so much history about the Kings, as well as the prophets. The video accompaniment with Lysa TerKeurst in Israel brought it all to life, and she has a way of talking and writing about the facts in such a story like manner. She brought it all to life. Bonus part, finding more trust in our Heavenly Father!
Why do I do this to myself! The idea of the plot was good, but the story was written so poorly!I don't know if I can say I really read this book since I skimmed so much of it, just to get to he end. Spare yourself the trite dialogue and stupid characters. I vow to no longer download free or discounted books!
I love Casting Crowns! This short book is packed with so much truth and was written to describe how each song came about for the album, “Only Jesus” by Casting Crowns. It's hard to explain, but reading the story behind each song filled my soul with such peace and brought the presence of Jesus so near. I'll definitely read it again.
I'm not sure how to describe this book. It was unusual, the way it was written with its use of the pronouns they/them instead of him/her. It enlightened on the discussion about gender we are hearing these days; vocabulary such as binary, agender, cisgender, and genderqueer. The devastation of the 2 families saddens me, as well as the disappointment in our “good ol justice system. An informative, educational read, that's for sure.
I considered abandoning this book, but I wanted to find out how the main character was going to find her way through her ordeal. The story line jumps around a lot, which I don't think was intended. The main character was so strong and smart at times and then the author had her doing things that were just plain stupid. The dialogue was a bit trite as well. Oh well, at least is was a freebie and I can add it to my summer reading challenge.
I don't know if I've ever been so disappointed in a book before, and I've abandoned plenty but felt the need to see this one through. This book started out SO good, so exceptional as a matter of fact I thought it would be up there with The Help or Sarah Addison Allen's books. But then the author lost all sense of the characters she worked so hard to develop and moved the plot in such a way that she destroyed the entire story and characters. Nothing was then believable and then she went on and on with irrelevant points and descriptions. So bummed this was my last read for the summer before going back to school. Oh well, there's always another book in the horizon.
