The plot kept me going; I wanted to find out what was going on. A fast, easy read but wasn't thrilled with the ending, but I think that was the author's point-to make us wonder what happened. Scary how fast people can turn on each other.
Done, and so worth the read! My rating went down to a 4 only because I sure hope Coben's new series is going to cast Wilde (and Esther) and we get to find out more about his past.
John Hart's writing style is so fluid! He gives his characters depth (but there are a couple of creepy sociopaths ones in this story) and the mothers are on the back burner...but still so good. His other books are even better than this one!
“Heartrending yet ultimately redemptive, In an Instant is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and carrying on...even when it seems impossible.”
I found it interesting for the story to be narrated by Finn, the daughter who perished in the accident, with her being the witness to everyone's truth and watching them move through their grief. Hard not to think of Jared while reading this story, wondering how he would have narrated his death and the aftermath. Don't worry though, I didn't dwell on that, nor will I.
I'm not sure what I think...style of writing was choppy to me and had to do some rereading to figure out what had happened. I loved the characters, so raw and broken, but the story was just so heartbreaking all the way to the end!
For me it was slow to start and finally got interesting about half way in. Interesting plot line, especially with what is going on in the world. Midwives is still my favorite book of this author.
2 1/2 to a 3...A quick read, somewhat suspenseful and kept my interest. Simple writing, simple characters, good, simple mystery.
Definitely a page turner. I know this is a book of fiction, but there is no way the main character would have been given all of that authority. Also, the author tired to throw in too many distractible suspects.
Really good so far! Love this author!!!
Done! Not as good as The Last Child or Iron House, but worth the read!
Another story, not of the typical crazy-twisted Hoover type, that is sweet, but still unpredictable and full of surprises. Miller is my favorite character, and Jonah is a close second.
I was reading the second book in this series and then decided to put that on hold to read the first book. I wanted to know more about the main character, Katie Scott. She is an Army Veteran with PTSD after her time in Afghanistan, and is now a rookie, yet quite the gifted detective. There are mixed reviews about this book, but I felt it was a solid mystery with a good pace and it kept my interest. Now on to finishing book 2.
Hmmm...It did keep me reading, but I still gave it a 2, I knew who did it WAY before the book told me. But, in case you don't know this already you will learn a few things. haha
1. Don't lie!
2. Don't cheat on your spouse.
3. You really don't know your neighbors and friends as much as you think you do.
4. Mom's want to protect their children more than anything, but I don't know any mom's this stupid!
5. You're going to get caught if you are this dumb.
6. If people are really this ignorant, then our human race will be wiped out soon.
I give this book 2 1/2 stars The story is very relevant with what is going on in our world with racial issues, but I feel it could have delved into it a bit more and on a deeper level. The main character, Emira, did go through a transformation (slowly) that was nice to see. However, I don't think the white characters changed at all, maybe that is relevant at this time, too. I don't understand what the BIG hype was to read this book, though.
If you don't mind being confused and having to go back to reread parts, then I highly recommend this book! Plots twists galore, characters you will love and despise, and an ending that will leave you hanging unless you now read The Family Remains.
Sweet short story! If the ghost in the bathtub throws you off, keep at it, it will make sense later.
Merged review:
Sweet short story! If the ghost in the bathtub throws you off, keep at it, it will make sense later.
Such a sweet story! It was uplifting, and I enjoyed how the author brought the characters together.
Karin Slaughter knows how to draw in the reader! She develops her characters with so much depth and the plot is filled with lots of twists to keep you in suspense. If interested, I would definitely start with the first book.
Not nearly as good as the Magic Tree House series, but a nice change of pace for a read aloud to my my students. The series does take the reader through the United States, with facts about the states, landmarks, etc... which is good for kids to learn these days.
This was such a heartbreaking story, but with the title, I thought it would be a more hopefilled read. I kept waiting and waiting for that to happen, and I suppose it finally did in the end, but it wasn't soon enough for me. The spunky Sonny, who narrates the story, is who kept me reading.
Have you ever hugged a book when you finished it? I loved this story! The characters are delightful, and the small town family community made me want to move to Dove Pond. As I was finishing this book my heart felt lighter. If you want to fall in love with characters and feel the magic of hope, this is the book!
LOVED this story!! Another whimsical town filled with delightful characters who love one another, make mistakes, forgive, with a little magic thrown in. I would love to be a part of a small town like this and I wish the Blackbird Cafe was real.
