Had high hopes for this highly appreciated and talked about read. I wasn't a fan of the writing style and I guess that's due to personal preferences.
1 star earned for the atmospheric read. You can walk through the town, the house, and the gruesomeness which I appreciate.
1 star earned for the cover art
The story itself felt like a rollercoaster with each peak feeling like something was about to go down. The actually climax of the story felt overdone and I was very much ready for a resolution. I ended up skimming through the last 4 chapters to get to the ending which was uneventful.
It's easy to give Seth Rogen five stars...I mean, it's Seth Rogen. This is not a life changing, perspective altering memoir but as a fan of his writing, movies, and overall personality, it's awesome to get an inside look into the more intimate details of his life and way of thinking.
My greatest take away was that Seth Rogen is indeed outspoken and stands up for what he believes in. This is what makes me a fan of the man.
This book is about a girl who deals with her mommy issues by dating unavailable people. The main character is frustrating and hard to care for because she keeps putting herself in the same situations over and over again. I sympathize with Renata, who truly doesn't have time for the bs her friend keeps intentionally going through.
Did everyone really live happily ever after in the end?
I appreciate the inclusive storytelling throughout this book. I definitely felt the ache and pain of each neglected and abused character.
Wish we heard more from ash and plum as they're the unwieldy creatures that had the most significant impact on the story.
This could easily be turned into a movie or Netflix series. There are elements of the story we've seen before BUT the story telling of the author is IMMACULATE. I was originally hesitate reading a YA but appreciate the descriptive and imaginative wiring that had be walking through each scene. Perfect amount of horror, thriller, and psychological twists and turns. Love love love!
One star for the good writing, one star for the 15% of the book I enjoyed. This story was like stranger things, saw, and ghost busters thrown into one to describe capitalism which yah I agree. The characters were bland and even though they went through hell, I didn't care for them. I ended up skipping through the last 25% of the book because the ending kept DRAGGING on and I wanted to know what the resolution would be.
Quick read and not as dense of a memoir than I'm used to. It's heartbreaking reading about the possible painful experiences gay men, and especially black gay men go through as a means of coming into themselves and their sexuality.
Huge trigger warnings regarding SA/physical abuse so be cautious.
One star taken off for the reading experience. The story jumps back and forth often to different points in time which was difficult to follow.
If you like shows like “Dead to Me,” “Ginny and Georgia,”and “The Good Girls,” you'll enjoy this book. This reads exactly like a binge-able Netflix series and was easy and quick to get through. Fin and Vero are enjoyable and likeable characters, they're relationship is very precious and something you only hope to have as a suburban single mother.
Although enjoyable and very much a comfort read, this type of story is something I've come across before whether on tv or other murder mystery type stories. The twists and turns were eloquently made though some were predictable. I won't be continuing the series but the ending did make me chuckle.
This book truly is a warm hug that somehow also seamlessly integrates mystery and thrill. Just like the characters, you learn to love Vera and her STRONG, seemingly one sided personality. I will be reading this book again in the future and pairing it with different teas ☕️
If my emotions weren't numbed by the Ativan I took yesterday, I'd be sobbing right now.
This book had ALL the feels. From heartache, to adoration, to love, to belonging, and all the cozy drama in between.
Such beautifully written characters and personalities. I cannot wait for more from this author!
Also the twists and reveals!!! WHAT!!!
It's been a while since a book make me laugh, made me feel seen, and made me cry. Amazing story telling by Erika Sanchez. I feel like I read a part of my life and things to come in from this book. I'm in awe and so blissful knowing she's living a full and wonderful life as a Latina.
Love love love! This is a book I read for my queer teen closeted self and man this book brought a lot of healing. TW because I wasn't prepared for this story line but there is SI discussed within this story and it was quite emotional.
Anyway, Yami and Cesar are the sibling duo I didn't know I needed. Their character development is so awesome to watch. I saw myself in them and at the same time I saw my siblings. They're precious, this story is precious. I love the writing style, it was very much like I was involved in every conversation and feeling all the emotional experiences each of the characters felt. Highly recommend this to young queer readers and newly out of the closet adults.
The love story was the worst part about this book. Predictable. Not smutty enough. And I just wasn't loving Vivi and Rhys. The magic and witchy based plot brought the drama which I enjoyed the most. I wish the tension of lifting the curse lasted a bit longer but I get that this is a romcom book first.
Best thing about reading this book was that I learned I appreciate smut and I may have a thing for queer witches because Gwyn melt my soul melt.
This was a comfort read for me and something to get me out of a reading slump.
A wonderfully told and beautiful story of a young dyke finding who she is in this world. You really get to know Juliet in this first person perspective. She's fragile force that you quickly love and want the best for.
