This is my second book I read from Hermann Hesse. The first one was “Unterm Rad” (Under the wheel) which I had to read as a young teenager for school. I hated it, although remembering back, the story was really amazing.
Well, this time I am much older and finally can understand the writing of Hermann Hesse. And this book is especially good. Really great story about the meaning of life and what is important in ones life. Written in such an excellent way, this book is a big enjoyment to read. But be warned, this is not a light story, not an easy story and not written in an easy german either.
I highly recommend this book, especially in german to everyone who wants to read some very good short novel.
While I really enjoyed this Sci-Fi pulp joy ride, I just can't get myself to give it more than three stars, simple because there are parts that are just a bit too much pulp joy ride. Still, if you want to read a nice sci-fi novel without exhausting all your energy this one is highly recommended.
What should I say about this book. That I understood it? Partly, but not all, and I think this book is almost impossible to understand. The writing stile was excellent and for me, as a non native english reader, also quite challenging and I was happy that I could read that on my Kindle where looking up words is just so nice and easy.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to read some really good literature and wants to challenge their brain and end up with a much richer vocabulary than before.
One of the best ones from the Culture series, the whole story worked so very well together. So many fantastic moments and places. This was a very enjoyfull ride.
Like the first book it is a mixture of really good, mediocre and shit parts. In the overall view the good trumps the bad parts, but not enough to give to four stars. I still think some parts are just uselessly long and do not play any part in the overall story. The description of the relationship between the main character and one of the main women is still neckbeard level horrible. It could have been much more, or not.
But then, it is a story about a guy told by that guy as an old guy.
If the third book ever gets released, we might get a answer to all this why and ifs and whats.
Well that was very different than any other culture novel I have read yet. But it was much better than the previous one I read, Excession.
While the culture or any of the space faring things get never mentioned, it has an amazing story. Loved it.
A collection of short stories, loosely placed in the Culture universe.
Some are interesting, some are less. In general I would say average. There was not one where I was really blown away, but they are not bad either.
It is a short read, so why not read it.
Well now that was a surprising good book. Placed in the Relevation Space universe the books contains two short stories, both very well written. I can just highly recommend that to anyone who wants to read some good Science Fiction.
How Vonnegut writes is just simple amazing. Every sentence a pleasure to read, every page a pure enjoyment. The whole book sounds even more important when you look at the world today. Just amazing. Highly recommended
While this book started off really good and is amazing well written, at the end it felt a bit like a let down as the whole usual the underdog gets the powers, the people that need to survive survive and all is well. It is not bad, and actually very good, better than Mistborn, but still I felt that it could have been so much better.
Good, but by far not as good as the first one. A lot of extended talking which seemed a bit unnecessary.
Really awesome book, way better than some of the previous books (Revelation Gap, Redemption Ark) out of this Universe (Revelation Space)
Worse than the first one, especially the first half is just a boring drag that it felt like I read an even worse book. Lucky that it picked up a bit in the second part and got quite good at the end. Still too little to give this a solid four star rating.
My first impression after I finished reading this book was: Well, Hollywood did over action shit everything, even back then, when I thought they made good movies.
Anyway, my first book from Umberto Eco and I choose this one basically because I knew the movie. I really enjoyed it, but there are parts that need your 150% concentration or you will miss out parts and get lost in the rest of the page.
I am not giving it five stars because I thought there was a bit “umpf” missing. Really can't put my finger on it, but I just can't give it top marks.
Still, I loved it, and I am looking forward to read more books from him.
Heinlein books are not easy to ready. If you read them as science fiction you will be disappointed, but if you read them as view on society then you will be utterly delighted.
This book is just fantastic, a very interesting view on our society, on politics, religion and so on.
After reading this with a different expectation than when I read “Moon is a harsh mistress” I thinking I need to read “Moon is a harsh mistress” again but this time not as a science fiction book, but as book that writes about our society in the bounds of science fiction. Similar like reading a Philip K. Dick novel.
A lot of short story collections have stories that range from meh to really good, but this collection holds pretty much only really amazing stories.
I put of reading this book because, as said, short story collections are often so much hit an miss. But not this one.
All the stories are in the Relevation Space universe and here and there you find some characters coming up that are also in the normal novels.
Highly recommended
Now that was an awesome read. Probably the best book out of the “Relevation space” Universe.
That was a really great read. Most of the book was very good with an really interesting story, interesting characters, great background and on top of that it was written really well. Parts of it were so good that couldn't really stop reading.
Other parts had a bit of a drag in it and felt disconnected from the overall ark.
Overall I highly recommend this book and I am looking forward to read more from the Culture series.
What an enjoyable read. Perhaps a bit dry, but it is hard to write about these kind of topics without a little bit dry feeling. Still I learned more about the human history and why certain parts were more prone to move forward than others. Recommended.
Much better than the second part, a thrilling and great ending to this trilogy. Overall I am very positively surprised by this fantasy series. Normally I shy away from those kind of things, but this one was really good. Recommended.
It is a good book and a very informative read about the start of the US space program and how it quickly was setup to counter the Russian launches. What kind of people were flying on the first rocket ships. Pretty impressive.
Recommended for all and not only for people interested into the space race back then.
A solid read, actually better than I expected from any novel in the Star Trek Universe. It keeps the mushy stuff to a bare minimum and gets on with the story line that is actually quite good.
I say that next to the first book this is the one of the best, if not the best in the Culture series books I have read.
Everything from the story, the settings, the characters, everything is just really amazing. Well written, well laid out, amazing plot. And on top of that a really satisfying ending.
Highly recommended to everyone.
Not much to say or complain. A wonderful story in this wonderful universe, something I truly enjoy.
Some reviews say the ending is disappointing but I disagree. On the other hand when you look at all the other culture books, none of those books have really big endings. The story is what counts in those books. And they are all amazing and this one stands no lower.
I have read several Stephenson books, but this is by far the beast of them. Amazing story, his really good writing combined together make this an amazing read from the first page to the last page.
