I'm so curious about the background and the aspects barely mentioned, but I've grown so tired of the actual story itself. Why? Because it really seems like they just run in, demand answers from the villains or tell them to stand down for the 10th time, and then let them run away after a battle takes place. Like, it is so annoying. And everyone just letting The Order take credit for something they had no hand in– seriously??? They are obviously assholes and corrupt, don't let the populous think they are the Chosen Ones.
I almost DNF'd but I was hoping we'd learn more about why everyone in The City doesn't know about the rest of the world or even consider that there might be more out there. Obviously it is a compulsion, but... sigh I could go on and talk about what feels like inconsistencies about the world building oh and let's not forget about how Kitris and the Priestess think Max failed in shutting the Grey Gates????? but like wouldn't that mean the gates are still open????? and it is obvious they aren't open????
So, it is a compulsive read, but everything falls apart the more you stop to think about it.
ehhhhh I kinda have more questions at the end of this book than the other and it is bizarre to me how she doesn't try to get rid of the demon who has tried killing her multiple times. So, at the end of the book the fight ends because she breaks the ritual thing and hurts the demon so he doesn't attack her anymore, but proceeds to just... ignore him? Then other Warriors show up and they also... ignore the demon. Like... what?! They fight dark magic and this demon is trying to open the Grey Gates but they are all "oh he has a boo-boo, we don't need to worry about him." WHAT?! Like if you aren't going to kill him can't you at least send him beyond the gate? Or take him with you to the Guardian so they can deal with him?
It is... so confusing.
Like, the story is interesting and as confusing as the setting is, I still mostly enjoy it, but wow I really have to turn my brain off and stop thinking.
OH and let's talk about Bryce, real quick. He's the love interest, right? But... he taught a fighting class when she was training with the Order 8 years ago, but for some reason he is now always in the field... whatever, what I want to know is how old is he? Because I didn't assume he was the LI at first. He taught a class – cool, dude was probs in his 30s so now 40s? and she is... maybe MAYBE 30??? If there is gonna be an age gap, fine, but I'd like it noted. It's just weird how they read as the same age...
Katrell is abused emotionally and physically by adults in her life and works to the bone trying to afford rent, food, and (perhaps subconsciously) her mother's affection. This book... there are so many sad moments as we watch Katrell injure herself in order to survive and not know when to quit because there is no guarantee things will get better.
It is very emotional and I was so nervous wondering just how far she would fall. There were some moments that seemed a bit OTT or just didn't make sense, but for the most part this is a great book. The ending is so emotional and such a relief, I teared up a bit.
The narration was fantastic. Will say, I listened to it at x2.5 in order to get through all the pain she was forced to endure, but I still thought the narrator did a great job with all the different voices.
I haven't read fanfiction since... I mean, it has to have been a decade, but I'm so obsessed with [b:The Foxhole Court 17259690 The Foxhole Court (All for the Game, #1) Nora Sakavic https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1358594228l/17259690.SX50.jpg 23855134] that when I saw people talking about this fic from Andrew's POV and how perfect it was, I had to give it a try. And you know what? I'm so impressed. I just re-read AtfG literally two weeks ago, but re-read it again WHILE reading this to see how it lined up. Honestly, I had a great friggin' time– best choice. The author nails Andrew's personality perfectly and it is so interesting seeing Neil from his POV. Just... honestly the best.
Okay the narration and production of this one is absolutely awesome. The story... was alright. I love heists, so I was intrigued and excited to see this go down. The banter was great, but I really wished there was more of it because it felt like most the book was listening to the backstories of the crew and how they came to be how they are.
I'm not super happy with the fact that Annie Anybody's gift was restored... the way it was. I honestly rolled my eyes.
But it is cute, fun, a little dark, and entertaining. I might read the next one as well.
Some good groveling here and I love how Sloan didn't except shitty apologies that led to the love interests actually learning how to apologize sincerely not only to her, but to each other. There is definite growth here. I never thought I'd like North, but he put in the work to be better not only for her, but for his son as well.
Saylor is still 100% the best though and I do wish Hunter received more page time where we could see them just chill together or even cook with Lio.
4.5 stars rounded up because I practically inhaled this. Cute, funny, emotional. I liked how real the main characters are although the emotional manipulation by Will's mom got so annoying especially because it is never really addressed.
I'd call this a slow burn, if anyone is looking for a slow burn fake marriage read.
It is pretty good, but she is so concerned with not being doomed when it is so easy??? 6 months until the heroine appears, so time to study and just not be a bitch to her when she arrives. Like... that's all that needs to happen.
On another note, is the brother a potential love interest because oh my god. I'm seriously wondering if this character was adopted into the family hahahaha and hoping because he is honestly the best.
Honestly, wow. This was fantastic. Once I got started, I really didn't want to stop. So many twists and turns I didn't see coming. I really don't know how to talk about this book without giving spoilers away haha.
After loving A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, Five Survive, and this book, I can definitely say I look forward to whatever this author cooks up next and will most likely enjoy the hell out of it.
This is an interesting book with an interesting world. I kinda wish there was more explanation, but I was able to understand everything for the most part.
There is a slight love triangle going on, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of the romance bit since it seems way way too quick. I get that magic is taking place here and things, but ehhhh idk.
I do plan on reading the next.
I knew I'd like these two, but they quickly became one of my favorite couples. I love them and their banter. This book was so much fun and the last 2 chapters? Tear-jerkers for sure. Ugh Venom is such a closet-romantic. And all that talk of food?? I'm so hungry.
Looking forward to continuing this binge read!
It is sweet-ish, but it felt like most the book was talking about how horrible her life was with her fluffle and experiencing that with her rather than how awesome her wolves are. Seriously, we get barely a day and a half with the wolves (most of it is spent sleeping) and it is SUCH insta-love. Immediate recognition of mates and then snuggles like the rest of the time.
There were also continuity errors? Like, how long was she actually with her fluffle– weeks or months? At one point she says she has 5 bunny shifter mates, but I am pretty sure it was only 4. Somehow the bad guys get onto the wolves' territory???? But then the parents try and immediate can't, so like what happened there ESPECIALLY since the pack knows they are protecting a shifter on the run?
It just... a lot of it made no sense. There is little personality difference between her wolf mates and I was continuously getting them confused. It really isn't great??? I love the BunnyxWolf shifter dynamic and the characters leaving their homes and where they should be safe but aren't and going to the predators and finding love. THAT is great, I love this bit, but we don't see any actual HEALING happen after all the abuse she went through. I need healing, not just “oh they love me and treat me great... hope I don't die so I can be with them!” It was bizarre.
Reading this was a huge letdown and I'm not sure I want to put myself through it again with the next book.
ALSO: both the author and the MC saying the MC wasn't raped because she asked for it, is toxic af. I get it is a grey area, but she was in heat. I don't care that the bunny shifters left her alone until she begged for them, OBVIOUSLY she was going to give in because shifters can die going through heat alone (this is actually mentioned in the book). Is it rape? Maybe not classically, but it is assault especially since women bunny shifters immediately mate with the men that get them through their first heat. So. What. The. Fuck.
Essentially she was given the choice of having sex with people she dislikes OR dying.
The absolute trauma Ellora goes through in this book is barely touched on or acknowledged at all.
Poor poor Devon. I really needed more groveling, tbh. Also, this spin-off feels less fleshed out??? Like the side characters don't have as much personality or screen time and I kinda miss that. And it is more sad than funny, which is a bummer, but I'm still really enjoying it. I'm looking forward to reading the the last book!
UGH this is the problem with binge-reading when a series isn't finished cries.
This series is GOLD. Ridiculous, a little OTT sometimes, and just fluffy goodness. Did I almost tear up in the epilogue? Yes and I felt totally blindsided because I don't think I realized how attached I became to these characters. Adorable and I love them all. I'll hella stoked to jump into Devon's spin-off even if the potential of cliffhangers will kill me once I catch up.
