Very disappointing. I've loved all of Earlene Fowler's books up to this point and have always been excited when they came out. This one takes a lot of character development at the beginning and I was about to abandon it. But I knew I had liked her books before so I gave it a bit more time. This new series is preachy and frankly I really do not like that. I also did not like the chapter breakups by character as I do not like that literary device and think it is a cop out. The characters got a little better at one point and then went directly back into being very much cliched with the occasional somewhat amusing throwaway lines. I'm glad when an author branches out but this is a rotting limb for me.
Good view of Mr. Wagler's struggle who after leaving his parents religion is not only told he is wrong, but that he is sentenced to eternal damnation, and that his parents support his being shunned by the entire religious community unless he begins believing as they do again. My only hesitancy is that I would like to know about the inner workings of the religion.
The old Gods are dying...or are they?
Something is happening to the Old Gods. Hermes, Hera, Athena, and our hero Apollo are all dying. Poseidon has gone mad and the only one that can save the day is Cassandra. Cassandra the prophetess who in classic Greek mythology could foretell the future but no one believed her. The problem is she doesn't know who she is until she dies. Bummer.
Is all lost? You'll have to read this foundational book of the Goddess War to find out how and if a mortal can save the Gods or does she even want to.
Nevada Barr has left the wooded trail that we have become used to in her Anna Pigeon, park ranger books and gone down a completely different path where the murderer is no longer cozy but is dark, dangerous and depraved!
When I first picked this book up I was discouraged that I wasn't going to get a feel for another one of our national parks while I also got to enjoy a well written and gripping mystery. The disappointment lifted quickly and I found myself staying up just a little longer and lingering just a bit more till I was able to finish this book.
I'll be sad if there aren't more Anna Pigeon novels but I'm ecstatic that Ms. Barr let us see the scary, depraved, twisted, messed up part of her writing psyche. Not just a good read but a Great Read!
If someone was thinking of starting a collection of first editions, I think this one would be a good one to start with. Go buy two copies of this book - one to read and one to be kept in a safe space. Then whenever the author is coming close to where you live to do a signing - go stand in line and wait patiently till you have both copies signed. I truly wish I was closer to a larger city at this point so I could follow my own advice. Ms. Morgenstern is an author to watch!
This book was captivating, well plotted, and achieved it's purpose of telling a great story while enchanting me and drawing me deep into the world of the characters.
Enjoy!
Non-fiction book about one woman's year long journey into creating her own reality. Mostly a good book although some of the folks she quoted I resonated with more than the author. One quote in particular was delightful and I paraphrase...“How can you open yourself to abundance if your heart is closed tight like a fist?” Again, I'm not looking at the book so the quote is probably just close but I love the lesson.
If you believe in creating your own reality this is a quite good reference.
