Why? Why does Jim Butcher hate Harry so much? LET THE MAN HAVE SOME HAPPINESS IN HIS LIFE, MAN!
Another bad one. I'm not sure if I'm going to continue the series or not. Basically, main character is a guy whose wife leaves him because he's “too nice” (or put another way, is a people pleaser and doesn't like to stand up for himself), but decides to go on their planned vacation to their friends' vacation home in the south of France anyways. There, he has to deal with the harassment of a mosquito that might not be real and a widower who has decided to just be the biggest damn asshole imaginable.
Honestly, I have no idea why it took almost the entire story before the other characters (who exist pretty much as just first names) called the a-hole out for being a jackass. The ending was bland and over all the story was subpar and only slightly better than the previous one in this series. Pretty much, I just didn't care about the main character and what he had to go through.
1.5 stars and barely even that. A boring “mystery” in name only. I felt zero connection to any of the characters and didn't really care about the protagonist. This felt thoroughly phoned in, which I'm slowly starting to realize is probably the case with the whole Amazon Original Stories thing in general.
Note: I actually read Valor's Choice in the A Confederation of Valor omnibus, but I'm counting both books in it separately since they're, you know, separate books.
I should also note that I read this as part of an effort to read as many novels written by women this month as a way to celebrate Women's History Month.
Anyways, I enjoyed Valor's Choice. It's a fun military SF novel that doesn't take itself too seriously in that there's a healthy mix of action, drama, and humor. The interplay between the characters, especially the enlisted marines, reminded me of Robert Asprin's Phule's Company and that's one of the things I enjoyed so much about that novel.
All in all, a very good novel.
An absolutely wonderful book. My only complaint is that tea monks don't exist in real life, unfortunately.
Interesting premise. The stories were generally good, but there was a bit of repetitiveness because of how many stories there were.
Five stars? Not enough! Neither is six, seven, or ten. Goodreads has to completely redo their rating system to add more stars! I love Fern, Maylee, Galliana, Satchel, and the rest! AND POTROAST!
And Viv and Tandri are married!
Absolutely loved it. I had read the short story a couple of years ago, but I had to read this when I saw it at the library. An amazing adaption with stunningly beautiful artwork. As for the story itself, it's one of my favorites and just shows that Neil Gaiman is one of the best storytellers out there.
Another enjoyable entry in the Kris Longknife series. Exciting with lots of thrilling action and space battle.
Having said that however, I may never forgive Mike Shepherd for killing off Tommy!
This was fun. The ending took me by surprise. Still not trusting any old ladies anymore.
I might be bias in that this is the first memoir I've ever read, but this was an amazing book. Funny, heartbreaking, funny still more.
Another banger of an entry in the series.
So I knew that Hank Peterwald dies at some point in the series, but I didn't expect him to die in this book. Good riddance, tbh.
I'm not a horror fan, but I enjoyed this one. The dread and tension were both palpable for the most part. The ending was kind of meh, but otherwise it was really quite enjoyable.
It was a bit slow at the start, but really picked up speed about halfway through. Had twists I did not expect, which is nice. Only knock I have is that the bulk of the story is that Maigret spends a lot of time just standing or sitting around, waiting and that's only when he isn't rushing off from place to place. Nonetheless, I would recommend it.
