Doctor Who: The New Adventures

Doctor Who: The New Adventures is a 60-book series with 60 released primary works first released in 1991 with contributions by John Peel, Terrance Dicks, Nigel Robinson, Paul Cornell, Marc Platt, Andrew Cartmel, Andrew Hunt, Mark Gatiss, Ben Aaronovitch, Gareth Roberts, Neil Penswick, Peter Darvill-Evans, Andy Lane, Jim Mortimore, David A. McIntee, Christopher Bulis, David Banks, Daniel Blythe, Kate Orman, Steve Lyons, Gary Russell, Justin Richards, Daniel O’Mahony, Dave Stone, Paul Leonard, Lance Parkin, Craig Hinton, Lawrence Miles, Simon Bucher-Jones, Russell T. Davies, and Matthew Jones.

After the cancellation of Doctor Who as a long-running TV show, starting in 1991, the BBC awarded Virgin Books the license to produce what would eventually be an acclaimed series of novels based on the series. Starring the Seventh Doctor, these novels continued the story of the TV show, developing their own intricate canon. Unlike the TV show, this series of novel featured a high degree of mature themes.

In 1997, the BBC retracted the license, and Virgin continued to publish The New Adventures with one of their original characters (and a companion of the Doctor) in the leading role – see “The New Adventures (Bernice Summerfield)”.
