Too slow pacing. Too much focus on relationships between the band and not the haunted house
The Mary Poppins-speak is beyond belabored, alongside amateur journalist mythmaking with the principal characters speaking about themselves as if they were their own fans (‘history in the making', ‘we were all young and beautiful and gifted'). The author compares characters to celebrities instead of inspiring imagination. The spooky bits were fine if clichéd.
I loved this book, subtle and creepy. The full cast audiobook brings it to life
A very excellent book, though the ending was a little abrupt for me. Highly recommended for fans of light horror, folk music, and folk... horror? Is that a genre? It feels like it should be. The horror that comes from lush forests overgrown with myths and legends, that sound behind you you're not sure you really just heard- that's the kind of horror this book lends itself to. Several scenes are reminiscent of the stories you told in middle school sleepovers, without an ending or a proper beginning, but a rich and terrifying middle.
It's a fun novella that felt like an old vh1 remember the band kind of documentary. But with a ghostly kick.
I enjoyed it! But I do wish there was more, a found journal of Julien or something to tell us what he was going through during the stay. It does leave you wanting more and having almost no answers.
But it was an easy short read and I loved the audiobook has a full cast to narrate the seperate viewpoints!
I might downgrade this one later, once I've gotten a chance to be a little more analytical. That said, it was a lot of fun, just the sort of book I needed at the moment.

על פניו זה ספר מושלם עבורי עם כל המרכיבים שאני אוהבת: מוזיקה, צעירים בריטים מתוסבכים ובית (אולי) רדוף רוחות. ובאמת יש בו הרבה דברים מעולים - הוא כתוב טוב ונקרא מהר, רוב הדמויות מלאות באופי ומובחנות היטב זו מזו, מה שלא קל בספרים קצרים עם קאסט כה רחב של דמויות. הכתיבה מציירת תמונות יפות ועשירות של האחוזה העתיקה, הטבע האנגלי הפרוע וקומונת המוזיקאים ההיפים, ויש המון אזכורים נחמדים למוזיקה של התקופה (אפילו מצאתי פלייליסט בספוטיפיי לחוויית קריאה מלאה). האודיובוק הוא בכלל תענוג, כי כל דמות זוכה למקריא משלה (ורובם מעולים), כך שממש מרגישים כאילו מקשיבים לדוקומנטרי אודות להקה אמיתית, אלבום אמיתי, מקרה מסתורין אמיתי. לא פעם ולא פעמיים במהלך הקריאה רציתי לגגל איזשהו שיר שלהם או את עטיפת האלבום, לפני שנזכרתי שהם בכלל לא קיימים.
אבל למרות הכל, היתה לי תחושה שמשהו חסר שם. אולי זה קשור לסימני השאלה הרבים שנותרים בסוף. עמימות היא לא דבר רע, אבל בספר יש תחושה שהאירועים חסרי קונטקסט, שאין לנו מספיק מידע. היה עוזר לקבל עוד קצת היסטוריה, עוד קצת אירועים מוזרים, כדי שנוכל לבנות איזושהי תיאוריה, לפחות ראשונית, על מה שקרה שם. הפריע לי גם שג'וליאן, זמר הלהקה שנעלם, היה אמור להיות המוקד האמנותי והרגשי של הלהקה, אך למעשה הוא הדמות הכי חסרת אופי וזו שאנחנו יודעים עליה הכי פחות. לא רק שאין לו נקודת מבט בספר, אלא שגם בנקודות מבט של האחרים הוא בקושי מדבר. מי הוא? מה הוא עושה שם? ולמה שיהיה לי אכפת ממה שקרה לו? הרי הוא היה הדמות בספר שהיה לי הכי פחות אכפת ממנה.
והבעיה העיקרית של הספר קשורה דווקא לייחוד שלו - המבנה הדוקומנטרי. הוא מעניין ועוזר להישאב לספר, אבל מצד שני קשה מאוד להרגיש חרדה ומתח כשאנחנו כבר יודעים איך הכל נגמר. עוד מהשעה הראשונה של ההאזנה אנחנו מבינים פחות או יותר מה היתה השתלשלות האירועים, וכל מה שנותר זה לשמוע איך הסיפור נפרש ומה היו הפרטים הקטנים של ההתרחשויות. ההאזנה לספר הזכירה לי את אחד הפודקאסטים האהובים עליי, De dödas röster, שאני לא יכולה להמליץ עליו לאף אחד כי הוא בשוודית, אבל הוא נכתב על ידי שרה ב. אלפגרן שאחראית לסדרת “המעגל” שכן תורגמה לעברית. בקיצור, העלילה מספרת על נערה שנרצחה עשרים שנה לפני כן, ועתה חברתה הטובה פותחת פודקאסט שבו היא מספרת על המקרה ומראיינת את כל קבוצת החברים שלה מאז. מה שהופך את הפורמט הזה לכל כך אפקטיבי הוא שבמהלך הקלטת הפודקאסט היא מצליחה לחשוף אינפורמציה חדשה שמשנה לגמרי את כל תמונת המקרה. שום דבר כזה לא קורה בספר הזה: הסיפור שמסופר בתקציר הכריכה זה בדיוק הסיפור שתקבלו, לא פחות ולא יותר. אין פה טוויסטים או כיוונים עלילתיים חדשים. מדובר יותר צביעה יפה ומלאת גוונים בתוך קווי מתאר שהוכנו מראש.
ולמרות הכל, סוף הספר כולל את אחת הסצינות הכי קריפיות ומפחידות שקראתי מזה זמן רב, ואני מודה שהיה לי קשה להירדם לאחר מכן. אז אולי רק בשביל זה, שווה לקרוא אותו.
This was quite entertaining and did creep me out at least once. I'd say it's not so much “horror” as “weird fiction.” There isn't really a climax, and (thank goodness) no expository explanation at the end. I'm so glad Hand resisted the opportunity to have Nancy provide a tidy bow on the story, with her psychic powers and occult knowledge.
No, what makes this good is that Nancy doesn't know what happened. Lesley doesn't know what happened. No one knows what happened. Nancy was sensitive enough to feel that something was seriously wrong in this place, but that's all. And that feeds the weirdness. Hand gives us feather-soft brushes of the eldritch to put us in the right head space, and then, Julian just vanishes. No monster chase scene, no thunder and lightning, just absence. And Lesley's vision of tiny blood spots on the walls and birds smashing themselves on the bedroom window.
The bits and pieces of horror are woven subtly throughout, from photos of a pre-Christian ritual that has somehow survived in the village longer than elsewhere* to someone singing in a dark room, whom no one can quite identify, to the stairway in the Tudor wing that may not exist entirely in our three dimensions, you can pick up these off notes if you're patient. If you're looking for a spooky ghost or slavering monster, this isn't going to work for you. But it does have a good dose of dread, and plenty of atmosphere.
One warning - I wouldn't do the audio book, because the actor voicing Lesley was really irritating. I think she's a Brit putting on an American accent, and it just came out overly drawly and drawn out, like she's thinking way too hard about every word. Distracting and it prevented her from showing appropriate emotion based on what she was talking about.
*Apparently Hunting the Wren is still celebrated in Ireland today!
I wanted more out of this book. More creep, more explanation. I had to stop reading for a bit, because I wasn't that fond of the documentary motif. But when I picked it up again, I was ready for it and enjoyed it more. The setting was charming, though I wish there had been more OF the setting. I wanted pages and pages of weird house, weird burial mound, weird everything, not just little snippets. The atmosphere was well-handled, the musicians felt like old former hippie folk artists. It actually reminded me of college, though I was in college decades after the 60s. But the book reminded me of hippie, folk-loving friends I had. So even though it's eerie, I was almost filled with warm fuzzies. The musical aspects were handled very well. I just wanted a bit more horror with my folk.
