A book blogger I follow has been singing the praises of this series and I finally picked it up and I love it! It’s magical and whimsical, but has a bit of an edge to it that elevates it beyond just a cozy fantasy. The artwork is gorgeous! The world is very imaginative, lending the artwork a great pallet to work with. Coco the main character is a delight, and though we haven’t had much time to get to know the other characters, they still leave an impression. There is obvious allusions to deeper things happening that we’re sure to dig into in future volumes, which lends it a sense of mystery. One of the better manga I’ve read in awhile!
so sweet and magical, made me feel like i was going on an adventure 💞 and the illustrations are gorgeous! can't wait to read the rest
The art is absolutely stunning. I love the clever use of panels, borders, and negative space to add more magic and whimsy to the story.
Fantastic first volume, I can't wait to see how everything unfolds over the series.
This is one of the strongest opening volumes of a manga I've read in recent memory. The setting is immersive, the story starts and unfolds organically, each character is memorable and defined with plenty of backstory to explore and room to grow, and the art is jaw-droppingly gorgeous throughout. If this is what I can expect from future volumes, Witch Hat Atelier might be on its way to being one of my favorite manga I've ever read.
This is a very cute story so far. The art is gorgeous!! My only thing that I do not love is how creepy the witch person seems. I am wondering about what her role to the story may be . . .
So far, I like it!!!
A really cute and magical start to an adventure. I was recommended this series by a youtuber and it did not disappoint.
This year is ending up to be a year of manga and adult fiction (because Alex Awards) so I had heard of this but when it was in Libby, I grabbed it. While the story is a fairly standard magic school/training story (not a bad thing!) the art is INCREDIBLE and really stood out to me. Definitely, I'm intrigued and will continue on.
My first Manga ever. I was confused by the panel order at first, but got used to it. I guess it's normal that the story has such an open ending? Idk. Maybe it's to keep you reading.
Really liked it. It was cute.

Witch Hat Atelier is the first manga I've ever read! It came highly recommended to me, so I jumped right in. It took me all of 30 seconds to get the hang of reading it – backwards to me – but there were a few pages were I did get confused. BUT THAT'S NEITHER HERE NOR THERE.
Witch Hat Atelier Vol 1 is SUCH a delightful little story. It's about children, but it's not childish. Hopefully, you understand the distinction there. There's no real violence, and no real harm comes to anyone. It's about discovery, about learning, and above all, about the love of magic. As someone who grew up absolutely wishing with all my might that Hogwarts was real and that I'd get to go, well, I identified with Coco a great deal. She's a sweet, sweet little girl, and I can't wait to see where her lessons take her.
NOW onto the REAL reason I picked Witch Hat Atelier up – the art itself. Holy crap - it is absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. Even on the ‘regular' frames. It's all beautiful. And the spreads? Oh my god. There was more than one in this volume where I had to stop and really appreciate it for more than a couple of minutes. It's so pretty. The way the artist does hair, especially? And draping fabric? Gah. Gorgeous.
So all-in-all this was a fantastic first manga for me. Five stars!
The art is GORGEOUS and so so magical.
Coco is a sweetie and I can't wait for her to learn more magic.
I LOVED this book.
The plot is interesting, the type of magic system is really inventive, the characters sympathetic and at times frustrating (for the right reasons). The story is full of intrigue, taking turns I did not see coming.
I also loved the character design, the costumes are spectacular and are seriously inspiring me to create something similar.
But most of all the illustrations are gorgeous. I spent a long time just looking at all of the art on each page. Each is rendered with so much detail, you can tell a lot of skill and love went into these.
I cannot wait to read the following books. This ends with a real cliffhanger and leaves you wanting more. Kamome Shirahama is a master craftsman, I know I will read this again and again just to see the beautiful illustrations.
This is a very cute story about a little girl who wants to be a witch. The art is beautiful. Great for fans of Harry Potter, since is has that vibe. I really enjoyed this book and will read the rest in the series soon! :)
