In this collection created by Lari Don, we have stories about the most haunting, mystical and dark time of the year, the winter. Myths and legends from all over the world dedicated to the ice, the snow, the cold and the relief of spring.
''The Seeds of Winter''- The well-known Greek myth of Persephone, but with an interesting twist.
''The Snow Bear and the Trolls''- A folktale from the forests of Norway.
''The Prince of Wolves''- A Trimshian tale from Canada.
'' The Ibis Brings Spring''- A myth from Tierra del Fuego.
''The Hag of Winter''- A cold tale from Scotland.
''The Spider's Christmas''- A charming Christmas tale from the beautiful country of Ukraine.
''Ice and Fire''- A touching Maori tale.
''The Hungry Polar Bear''- A second tale from beautiful Canada.
''Missing Winter''- A Canaanite myth.
''The Fox's Footprints''- A third tale from Canada.
''Ukko and the Bear''- A Lapp legend from Finland.
''The Last Sun''- A tale from China.
''Blind Winter''- The Norse myth about Baldur's death.
''Five White Eagles''- A tale from Venezuela.
''The Hero With Hairy Trousers''- A tale (taking many liberties) about Ragnar Lodbrok and how he came to marry his second wife, Thora.
Almost every story in the collection is charming, written in beautiful, lively prose. The only story I had problems with was the last one, because it is very, very loosely based on this particular myth about Ragnar, whom is turnt into a kitchen boy. Still, I appreciated the notes provided by Lari Don on the sources of its tale and the reasons why she changed some parts of its narrative.
