Man did this book take me forever to read. I started this at the beginning of May and I'm just now finishing it. I was enjoying it when I was reading it but for some reason, I got about 46% into it and then put it down and didn't pick it back up until recently. I was buddy reading this one with Destiny, but she ended up DNFing it about halfway through. Honestly, I don't remember much about the first half of the book since I read that almost 5 months ago now. Overall, I did like this and the series overall but at the same time I'm just glad I can finally say I finished it. I don't really have much else to say about this one. I just need to read the graphic novels and one of the short stories and I can call this series complete.
6 Star Read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When you came to the farm and I thought I would have to shoot you. You told me to aim for the torso because it's a bigger target. Then laughed when I said your head looked big enough to me. - Chapter 32

I'm finally free of this series. I cannot listen to more cheesy YA romance jeez. Ok overall this series was alright for YA stuff. It felt cohesive and it juggled perspectives well but it dragged soooo much and felt very contrived + predictable
spoiler alert
The first half of this book felt like an eternity and it wasn't very interesting? It was a lot of characters learning about something happening and and then getting another character's perspective on the same thing happening. It felt super grindy and idk the angst was just a little bit too much. I also do like the characters but they felt very trope-y or they were summarizable by just a few words so their characters felt a lot less interesting. I didn't really comment on it in the past books since I was hoping for a better conflict in this one but it never really makes sense why Levana wants to be Empress instead of just using her powers or her forces to get her way. It felt like the whole marriage bit was oddly contrived as though marriage was the only way for her to get what she wanted. The schemes and plots from Cinder and friends were also really straightforward and didn't need that much setup when it ended up being a “just confront them” plan. I wouldn't say I'm dissatisfied since it met my expectations but it was just a 24 hr audiobook and it felt like I was listening to the same thing forever.
I needed to learn how to appreciate Winter as a character, but once I did it was AMAZING!!! And the ending and the characters and just WOW!! I'm in love with all of the characters and can't wait to read Stars Above to read what happens after.
This review is also featured on Behind the Pages: Winter
Winter has been subject to the Queen's harsh judgment for years. Forced to sit in the throne room as Levana causes countless deaths. Winter is beautiful but criticized for being meek and Levana makes sure she knows it. When Winter falls for her guard, Levana finds a new way to torment her, but Cinder has plans to overthrow Levana. Can Winter find it in herself to side with Cinder and rise against Levana?
Winter had an interesting twist in how she viewed herself and the Lunar gift. Despite her downfalls, she did her best in the situations she was given. But even though the title is Winter, there isn't as much focus on the character as you might think. But this doesn't impact the story negatively. Marissa Meyer makes sure the reader has enough of an idea behind Winter's story before moving on. There is a much better balance between all the characters. I had a hard time identifying what fairytale Winter was based on, but with the amount of plot and character development I understood. I did figure it out once the poison apple came around.
The Lunar Chronicles was an ambitious series. Each book introduced a new fairy tale twist and two new characters to carry on into the story. Unfortunately by the time the last book, Winter, came around, there were a lot of characters that needed their arcs to close out. I think this is the reason the last book felt so slow. For certain scenes, I wasn't sure at first why they were included and then I realized it was a pivotal moment for the characters involved. And there were other moments where I felt the scenes were stretched out and didn't need the amount of filler contained in them. Is the series worth a read? Absolutely, the voice acting was wonderful in the audiobooks. Rebecca Soler, throughout this series, consistently voiced every character as I imagined they would be. Just prepare for a longer finale.
My taste when it comes to book is very simple. If i like the characters portrayed in the book, then I'm sold.
This series is full of characters that i loved. Their relationships with each other is the reason I'm giving the books in the series 4 stars. I don't know how many times I'm giggling throughout the books.
Cinder and Thorne bantering each other were just hilarious. I especially like the exchanges between Scarlet and Winter. It was oddly cute.
I'm definitely going to miss them.
I loved this book. In my opinion, it was the best from the whole series. Finally Cress stopped being annoying and she was actually badass in this one, I liked her a lot.
Winter is such a dear character, I like her and I felt so sorry for her because of her sickness, but thinking of WHY that sickness was there made me love her so so much and I'm happy that she has Jacin to take care of her
This is one of my new favorite series of all time. I did not want it to end. I loved everything about this series. The fairy tale characters. The action, drama, love and intrigue. My only question now is when is this going to be a movie LOL
Y'all. This book is SO detailed. I cannot imagine the amount of work put into this. I love everything about the fairytale aspects. The retelling and modernizing and switching things up a little bit. SO GOOD. This is the kind of series where I'm sad it's over because I feel like I can't hang out with my friends anymore. These characters are my friends and now it's over.
Thorne and Cress forever. Goodbye.
Two stars for two reasons.
One: The length. It was too long and I felt that it dragged in places. I was bored for a majority of it.
Two: Winter didn't do anything significant and she really didn't have to be in it. I don't know why she was in it, but oh well.
Also, I started reading a physical copy of this book but I got so bored that I turned to the audiobook which didn't really help, but it helped that I could listen to it on double-speed. The audiobook was...meh.
I guess that's three reasons.
Oh I'm so happy I finally read this book! It's an excellent ending to this series.
The book is 850 pages but it's so action packed and exciting that it's so quick and easy to read, there's just one action scene after another and you can't stop reading. I loved the way the plot got tied up in this book, we've been waiting for the rebellion and Levana's downfall for AGES and to finally get there was so satisfying!
I loved the continued development of all of the characters - Cress coming out of her shell more, Thorne manning up and telling her how he feels eventually, Cinder leading the rebellion and Kai being just perfect. 🖤 Winter and Jacin are just the sweetest the whole time, I heart them a lot, and who doesn't love Scarlet and Wolf? Just love them all!!
Okay enough gushing about the characters. I just really enjoyed this entire series as a whole and I already know I will be re-reading it again. It's a solid fantasy series with a twist on retold fairy tales. Definitely one I recommend to everyone.
