Having read and loved Jesmyn Ward's more recent books, I could tell “Where the Line Bleeds” was her first novel. It doesn't have the almost mythic force & economy of storytelling that made “Sing, Unburied, Sing” such an essential read; however, the verisimilitude with which she evokes Black life in Bois Sauvage is already present in this early work.
