Ehhhhh not for me. It is really gritty and dark, but the atmosphere is small town in the woods where people who deviate from the accepted norm are shunned and looked down now. It was difficult to read about people equating gay guys with evil and devil worshipping. I get it is the town and the atmosphere, but still hard to read, you know?
And that is before the occult stuff even comes in, because there is a pagan religion and it is entwined with the priest...
It was also hard to read because Emil is so unlucky and keeps getting sh*t on and it just hurt. I liked his chapters more than Adam (I like him more than Adam), but they are brutal on my heart because I feel so bad for him! I need some hope, some light at the end of the tunnel to get me through darker books like this.
I stopped where I did because... well, I was hoping it would get better and wanted to read something outside of my usual (this is definitely dark, horror-ish), but let me go into why I stopped. This is spoiler-ish, but it is important enough to talk about.
Look, Adam gets possessed and the demon possessing him uses his body to have sex with Emil. Adam's first time ever having sex and he doesn't want it. In fact, up to and even during the act he says no to any kind of gay relationship because even though that's his sexual preference, he believes it to be wrong. So, to have the choice taken away??? Poor Adam is raped and I can't even blame Emil because he doesn't realize what he is doing is not what Adam wants because the dude is possessed. And the whole scene is written like a sex scene. I just.... I'm so grossed out even remembering the scene.
Soooooo, not my thing. At. All.
