In his first book of fiction in over four years, Carver has included all of his new work as well as his best stories from four earlier collections.

The titular story revolves around a man who is trying to give up alcohol dependency in a rehabilitation center and his attempts to call his estranged wife and current girlfriend.

The story is set over the course of three days at a rehabilitation center for people with alcohol dependency. The unnamed first-person narrator befriends a first-timer named Joe Penny (or 'J. P.') and reflects on his past, including a memory of his wife and landlord.
