When the Killing's Done

I vacillated between a three and a four on this big eco-terroism book. What pushed me to four was the absolute disgust and joy that I felt for his characters. There were scenes where I felt like I'd been kicked somewhere in my nether regions and would literally find myself holding my breath from the hostile emotions his characters evoked in me.

Boyle made me feel something and this is why I tipped to a four.

This was not my favorite Boyle. It is really well thought out, and his descriptions of Channel Islands is really very good, but I didn't buy it. Both Alma and David LeJoy (interesting that Alma's last name isn't as resonate) felt like straw dogs. He always has an agenda, but he usually gives his characters more space – more maybe he likes them better? Anyways, the opening scene with Alma's grandmother was spectacular, and I loved the sheep ranch bit with Rita but most of the time I was reading to finish it.

Boyle is a master. He is such a powerful writer - a craftsman of language and a robust storyteller. This book hums with life.
