Very poorly structured, with a sweet but slightly dull romance arc taking up the first half of the book, and then a bunch of secondary characters take over with the clunky redemption arc of a violently homophobic preacher. The author has strong feelings about the damage that can be done to children (gay or not) who grow up in such a strict, fundamentalist environment but then why have the preacher who assaults one of the MCs make a sudden 180 and wind up happily coupled off without facing any consequences for his past harmful behavior? And I understand the author's very pointed explanation that not all love stories need the crisis/separation/reconciliation tropes, but abandoning your main couple entirely for 100 pages and awkwardly changing POV to characters we barely know (and don't have time to develop) was jarring.

This was a Kindle freebie and I was happy to explore a new-to-me author, but it didn't work for me at all.
