Really enjoyable read ! I found the beginning a bit slow, but once everyone was together it was really fun and I loved how all the relationships developed. The romance was a bit cliché, but it was exactly the kind of cliché I was looking for so I really enjoyed it.
I found the ending a bit forced though.
A bit predictable, but still good
Tbh, a lot of traveling...good enough though. I've heard the second book is better so excited for that!!! Characters were interesting and the hint of romance is fun
“People lived because she killed, people died because he lived.”
tbh i was confused half the book and it got boring at times (forced myself to finish it) but for the most part i had fun :)the dagger to throat scene did infact happen btw
Zafira and Nasir are complicated and not all what everyone thinks they are. They are also being used by others to get what they want regardless of how Nasir and Zafira feel. So the reveals by the end are unexpected. I wasn't always sure where the story is going and I can't swear that all the events felt necessary. So I'm glad I was listening to this one. I am very interested in seeing what happens next.
plot almost identical to children of virtue and vengeance but characters and execution WAYYYY better. i had my problems with the writing and romance but writing wise this is Faizal's first book so i'll let it slide
This book only got good for me around the last 20% because that's when things really started picking up. Nothing really happened in the first 80%.
Granted this is the first book in a duology, you can still actively have a very intense/fast paced/action packed plot while world building, introducing characters, etc.
Don't know if I'll continue, we'll see.
Wow. The world building was amazing and easy to follow and i fell in love With every single Character. I only guessed one of the twists which was even more amazing lol
I absolutely loved this!
Nog een boek dat ik te lang geleden in mijn Owlcrate-abonnement heb gekregen en nooit heb opgepakt, ondanks dat het heel goed klonk. En nu ik dit heb gelezen, kan ik bevestigen dat het inderdaad goed is!
“We hunt the flame, the light in the darkness, the good this world deserves.”
Who decides what's out of reach, if not we ourselves?
4.5 rounded up; I really loved the story and the plot!!! There were so many twists and turns.. like all this mystery and connections between Altair!! He just seems to have unlimited tricks and secrets up his sleeves lol I was a little disappointed with Deen's quick death early on in the book. Zafira and Nasir's scenes were 0//__//0 I was disliking Altair in the beginning but he ended up being my favorite by the end! A little disappointing how Altair describes himself as forgotten in the end and they kind of all just allowed it.. ;-; I'm sure it'll all be answered and unraveled in the next book!
Glossary and pronunciation guide!
Im very on the fence with this book, i didnt quite fall in love with any of the characters as individuals or their relationships together though i think im close to that... im really hoping the next book gives a little more
Plot wise I'm intrigued enough to read the next one
The book is written in a very floral and elegant style that is a bit harder to read than the average book. You can tell that the writer is very good.
I am only 4 chapter in so far and I just cannot quite get into the story as much as I would like.
The main girl is 17 and your average ( i want to be tough and help people lead) that is is always amazing.
The main guy is the prince. He is also an assassin that has killed so many for small things that his father does not like.
I am greatly hoping that the starry will build and get better soon as I was very excited to read it

My one problem with this books is that I know in a couple months, I know for a fact I won't be able to tell you anything that happened in it. But as of right now, I liked it.
This book has a slow start but then it picks up and it is so gripping and imaginative. I really enjoyed it.
This has been a very tough decision, but I've decided that I cannot finish this book.
DNF @ 46%.
On the surface, this book has everything that I want. I mean, I was so hyped I drove 30 minutes away just to get this book and practically snatched it out of the poor librarian's hands. The beginning was very lovely, and I was really into it. The issue began on Sharr - that's when I couldn't take it anymore.
I just didn't connect with any of the characters (except for Altair). There was no connection and therefore I couldn't feel the stakes. I think this is largely due to the conversations being nonsensical and difficult to follow, the lack of a setting (there was just no development put into Sharr), and the fact that Nasir and Zafira are so busy in their own thoughts that nothing of importance is getting done. We're missing key aspects of the plot just to hear Zafira and Nasir's repeated thoughts.
This book has so many words, but very few that actually have meaning and progress the plot.
This would have been a thousand times better without the weird, forced sexual tension between Zafira and Nasir.
The story's basics were interesting - a mysterious quest to bring magic back to the world - but the characters were not engaging. At all. The people I did like and wanted to see more of were side characters. If I read the next book, I hope that we have more perspectives.
Also - smallest of annoyances, but I couldn't trust Zafira after the scene at the beginning of the book when she says she doesn't want ice cream because the area they live is always cold. Ice cream is delicious year-round, but especially in the winter.
I hated Nasir. All of his chapters were overly broody and dramatic and full of manpain (Yes, his backstory is explained later on, but he's still annoying)
disappointing but still phenomenal. predictable plot twists and a romance that i didn't care for, HOWEVER the atmosphere and the world itself were absolutely enchanting

Pros:
- Characters: I loved the characters in this one. Zafira was such a strong female character that did not let anyone take advantage of her. I loved how she constantly stood up for herself and defied people's expectations of her. Nasir was also a complex character who I at first thought was just your standard love interest in a YA novel, but he grew on me during the course of the book and I really appreciated how he was presented.
-Writing: I really loved Hafsah's writing style. I was able to easily place myself in the world and the characters shoes
Cons:
- Pacing: This book takes a while to get into. At first, I really did not care for the character's storylines. However, eventually, it picked up and I found it the plot to move along at a better speed. Hopefully, as Hafsah continues this series the pacing improves and there is less time dragging the story.
- I listened to the audiobook for this one and that really helped with the pronunciations and getting the true gist of the story and the characters. I know the author has a pronunciation guide on her website, but I really think there should be one in the book itself. It would help readers out, a lot of books would benefit from having pronunciation guides (one recent book I can think of is Wicked Saints).
Good world building in this fantasy centering around ancient Arabia. The plot points were a bit by-the-numbers, it was VERY long, and not all of the characters get depth, but I thought the audiobook was so well done; I think it kept me going when parts were dragging. Recommend for fantasy lovers, have already had some kids grab this after booktalks.
Probably should have DNFed but I kept thinking more was about to happen? There were some solid fantasy elements in here but overall I found it underwhelming. Sorry
