This is a simple and beautiful story. It taps into the surreal ache of grief.
Sometimes we think of mourning as hurting for familiarity, of grasping for something consistent and solid. But death and loss are rarely so simple.
Sometimes we uncover information we didn't know about the dead when they were living. We feel the loss of who and what we knew, but also the loss of not knowing parts of someone until after they're gone.
We question why that person hid and withheld. We question our relationship with that person. We question what they felt about us and what we felt and feel about them. We question who they were and who that makes us.
We Are Okay is a stunning, careful depiction of mourning and healing. It made my heart ache but the underlying theme is optimistic, one that insists that feeling lonely does not make us alone.
