I discovered this book through the Sword and Laser podcast. Based on the conversation, I expected something more like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This was humorous, but humor was a seasoning rather than the meat. The writing style flows really well. Even some of the more technical portions didn't bog me down.
I like the way the author sticks to the point of view of the protagonists throughout the book. In this first book, there is a lot the protagonist doesn't know about the antagonist, which seems quite realistic to me. I also enjoyed the character development in this book.
This story explores the diversity within a person's personality and where different choices can take an individual. This story also explores faith and belief systems. In this story we see how faith and belief can be used to try to control and limit a society with fear and violence. This is an example of an abuse of a faith, in my opinion. Without spoiling anything, I think I can say that the story brings the protagonist into a different experience and perspective on faith. I like the way the author explores these concepts. Ultimately, I likely have a different perspective then the author on this subject, but I like having the opportunity to see things from another's perspective.
I debated in rating this book between three and four stars. The depth of the thoughts the book invoked and the strength of the author's writing style pushed this to four stars. I plan to continue in this universe, but I don't know that it is a book that I would come back to for multiple reads. I do recommend this book to science fiction fans. Especially those looking for something science based that isn't too bogged down on details.
