This was a rather sweet romance with a few funny moments. I rather enjoyed reading it, so I'm glad I finally took the plunge and gave it a try. This isn't a book one thinks deeply about while reading or one to analyze afterwards, because it is like cotton candy, nice every once in awhile, but no substance. A cliche, for a cliche book, but it does sound pretty harsh since I did enjoy reading this.
The characters are ones seen in many romance movies, a fed-up woman ready to be done with men, and a rich man who doesn't think he can love. This book does show their growth with over coming past traumas and pain in order to learn to romance and be affectionate, or even recognize it. The side characters are, pretty plainly, side characters with rarely any scenes with them involved, and even less with them physically present in the scene.
The plot of this story, is the growing romance between the main characters and, for a romance novel, the slow build of the relationship and love between them was done okay. While there was instant attraction, it wasn't instant love, which is one of my pet peeves. The couple did grow into their marriage through all the drama they put each other through.
As much as I am complaining about the book, I really did enjoy it. The concept of them having a trial marriage, not understanding how a loveless marriage would really work, and characters acknowledging their toxic behavior, was quite refreshing. Although, acknowledging the bad behavior didn't actually stop it, so... not quite refreshing I suppose..
