As an assassin working for the pirate queen, Sorinda is surprised when Alosa's next task for her is not to kill a new target, but to captain a handpicked crew on a rescue mission. You had me at Pirate Queen! I have not read the first two in the series and that didn't dampen my enjoyment at all. There was a bit of explanation about the world, but I didn't feel that it ruined anything about the previous books. There was plenty of sailing and girl power. They were battles and other species to deal with. But the best part of the book was the way the romance just confirmed who Sorinda was. She called out one of the ‘love interests' when that was needed and opened up to another in ways that felt consistent with her character. This was just what I needed!
