There is good in Twilight. It's better than a lot of YA novels. It actually has a plot, story, themes, somewhat interesting characters that are more than cardboard cutouts. It's just that... compared to bad books, it's not that bad. Compared to good books, it is. I am 100% certain of that in 50 years nobody knows what this book is.
The faults of Twilight have been discussed in length.
My main reason to not like it is that I hate Bella. I find her selfish, egocentric... “insnöad” in Swedish. So totally in her own situation, there is no room for anyone else. She is extremely singleminded, totally focused on what she wants and getting what she wants, and she doesn't care one bit what anyone thinks about it. She “loves” Edward, so she has to get him, whether he likes it or not. And then that she doesn't ask anyone of help, advice, or council, she just goes on doing what she decides is the best thing to do, and consequences-schmonsequences. People should be grateful because she did what she did for them. That they didn't ask for it, didn't want it, didn't need it, that's not important to Bella. (So, yes, she is a damned strong character. Tough as nails. Knows what she wants and goes all in to get it. If it takes a year of playing a corpse and then trying to become one, she'll do that. Even when it breaks her father's heart. Who cared about that old thing anyway.)
Now, Christine pointed out something.
“In Twilight, Bella reveals an important personality trait: self-sacrifice. Bella moved to Forks so that her mom and her mom's boyfriend can travel together. She explains that her mother's happiness is more important to her than her own.
“'She stayed with me at first, but she missed him. It made her unhappy . . .'
‘But now you're unhappy,' [Edward] pointed out.
‘And?' I challenged.””
