Op 1 januari was het zover! Dan kreeg ik in mijn e-mail inbox de eerste van de vier geheime projecten van de Brandon Sanderson Kickstarter!Voor het echte boek moet ik nog even geduld hebben, door sneeuwstormen en print-problemen in Amerika, maar dankzij de digitale versie kon ik wel al meteen in het verhaal duiken!“In the middle of the ocean, there was a girl who lived upon a rock.”En wat was het weer een pareltje! Ik versta echt niet hoe Sanderson dat doet. Hij schrijft zo snel, zo veel en nog weet hij me met iedere nieuwe publicatie van mijn sokken te blazen!Zijn eerste in het geheim geschreven boek vertelt het avontuur van Tress, een jongedame die heel content is om de rest van haar leven op haar kleine eilandje door te brengen, totdat haar vriend Charlie in de problemen komt op zee en ze een reddingsactie op poten zet dat het avontuur van haar leven zal worden. “Most people never live, Tress, because they're afraid of losing the years they have left... years that also will be spent not living. The irony of a cautious existence.”Dit was zo'n tof, uniek, charmant en gezellig avontuur! Totaal iets anders dan Sandersons anders grootse epische verhalen, maar met dezelfde karakteristieke flair voor het creëren van de meest unieke, magische werelden.De wereld in dit boek berust op zo'n simpel idee, dat je niet kan geloven dat niemand dat nooit eerder bedacht. Het lijkt zo bedrieglijk simpel en voor de hand liggend. Het bijhorende magiesysteem is zo fantastisch uitgewerkt en biedt nog zoveel ruimte om te groeien. Ik hoop echt dat Sanderson nog verhalen zal bedenken in deze wereld, want ik wil ook de andere zeeën gaan verkennen! “The locals worshipped those twelve moons as gods, which we can all agree is far more ridiculous than whatever it is you worship. However, it's easy to see where the superstition began, bearing in mind the spores—like colorful sand—that the moons dropped upon the land.”De stem die het verhaal vertelt vind ik persoonlijk heel fijn. Ik zag noch de film en las noch het boek, maar ik zie zeker parallellen met [b:Stardust 16793 Stardust Neil Gaiman https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1459127484l/16793.SY75.jpg 3166179] van Neil Gaiman. Een uiterst vermakelijk avonturenverhaal, dat elementen uit traditionele sprookjes haalt.Hoewel ik nog steeds reikhalzend uitkijk om mijn fysieke exemplaar te mogen ontvangen, is ook het e-boek een echte visuele traktatie. Niet alleen is het boek doorspekt met prachtige paginagrote illustraties, maar ook de rest van het boek is prachtig verzorgd met hoofdstukelementen die mee het verhaal vertellen!Tress of the Emerald Sea is voor mij dus opnieuw een triomf voor Sanderson. Zijn plezier bij het schrijven van dit boek, wordt overgedragen op de lezer. Het avonturenverhaal is gezellige, innemend en vertrouwd, en de context verbluffend uniek en fantasierijk. Een absoluut genot om te lezen.
You might expect the Year of Sanderson to start with a book with characters as well crafted as in Stormlight Archive, as epic as Mistborn, or with a magic system to rival Warbreaker. But Tress of The Emerald Sea won't be that. It will be the most lighthearted, cozy, and feel-young book in the Cosmere- and I quite liked it!
The thing though is that this doesn't seem like a Sanderson book.

Después del alma del emperador debe ser la mejor “novela corta” de Brandon.
Se nota que la escribió de una forma más libre, muy buena historia en general ... Y tremenda protagonista
Narrated by Hoid. I dislike Hoid. But I like everything else about this book. It's just SO MUCH Hoid.
Wow so much to say. I Loved this book.
It was a ton of fun. A great start to the secret projects and a potentially good start to people who want to read the cosmere.
The characters are great in this and the story is excellent.
