In the book she has to adopt a cover story of being a jewelry thief and that backstory fits her waaayyy better than being the best assassin in the world. Also also, are you telling me the ‘world's-best-assassin' doesn't know not to take candy from strangers? She just gets up one morning and sees a box full of candy and decides to eat half of it without thinking that it might be a part of the killing spree happening! Really??
The only good attributes this book had was the worldbuilding and character banter. Other than that, it felt like the bare bones of a story like the author was just making sure all of the plot points were checked off instead of thinking about a story to tell. By the way, the book was too long for my liking, major ‘this-could've-been-an-email' vibes from me around the 300 page mark.
Everyone I know has been singing its praises, but I just didn't like it. I'll continue the series to find out what people mean when they say it gets better. But overall, this book just did not do it for me.
Oh and it gets two stars instead of one because there's a book she picks up called ‘The Walking Dead' and that made me chuckle.
Thx for reading <3
There are actually some really good parts in this book and kudos for SJM for writing this in her teens. There is an interesting overarching story, a world that I'm excited to maybe explore more, different realms and the most surprising for me: there even seems to be a lot of history in this world.
But that was sadly only 10% of the story. Everything I found interesting was glossed over to give more attention to the ridiculous romance and this so called "world-renowned assassin".
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a fantasy novel that starts off a bit slow, but ultimately delivers an engaging story.
While the beginning might drag a bit, if you can push through, you'll be rewarded with a rich world, a compelling heroine, and a intriguing plot. Celaena Sardothien, the main character, is a force to be reckoned with. Her assassin skills are matched only by her sharp wit and captivating personality. The emerging love triangle adds another layer of intrigue to the story, leaving you wanting to know who she'll choose.
Overall, Throne of Glass is a good read with a strong foundation for the series. If you're looking for a fast-paced fantasy from the get-go, this might not be it. But if you're willing to invest some time in the world-building and character development, you'll be happy you stuck with it.
Here's a breakdown of the pros and cons:
Pros:
* Compelling heroine with a mysterious past
* Intriguing love triangle
* Rich world-building (although it takes time to develop)
Cons:
* Slow start
I would recommend this book to fans of fantasy who enjoy character-driven stories and don't mind a slower burn at the beginning. With its well-developed characters and interesting plot, Throne of Glass lays the groundwork for an exciting series.
Final Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
i was told the series picks up after this book and only gets better. here i am, only one book in, and i fear i might like this series more than ACOTAR
Three stars for this book specifically, but 4-5 on average for the series as a whole.
This is a fine book one, but it's doing a lot of heavy lifting to set up the rest of the series. SJM's big three all have wildly different tones, so I would advise not going into this with the expectation that it's going to be “ACOTAR with different characters”. This is more fantasy forward. It's a strong series but I don't think it really hits its stride until you start getting into book three.
Unpopular opinion: I think it's fine to skip this series if you aren't enjoying it. It's a lot of books, and while I love them and think it's worth it, they're just not going to be for everyone. The consequences of not reading it are minimal in the grand scheme of things.
I'm reviewing this off a reread, so I tried to rate it objectively even though I know where the potential pays off.
Y'all keep telling me this series gets better y'all better be telling the truth I s2g.
It was initially very hard for me to get into TOG. It started slow but eventually sucked me in. TOG left me intrigued and wanting to read the rest of the series to get answers to my questions.
I really like the 3 main characters: Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian and can't wait to read their backstories.
I spent most of the book trying to decide which of the MMCs should end up with Celaena. There were cute moments with each MMC, but I wouldn't classify TOG as a Romantasy. I have high hopes for the next book though! ❤️
Assassins, romance AND a murder mystery? Sign me up!
~
Starting this book, I already had sky high expectations thanks to the hype on Booktok, which made me a little hesitant to pick it up. But OH BOY am I glad that I did!
The characters were well developed, with each their own flaws and motivations. Especially Lady Kaltain and Princess Nehemia were really interesting characters to me, as they both started of quit mysterious.
Celeana felt rather flat at first, but I feel like she quickly redeemed herself. I loved how, even though she is an assassin and ruthless and deadly and all, she still loved ‘girly' things like just dressing up in beautiful gowns and balls and parties. Celeana felt like the fun, reckless older sister I dreamed of as a child.
The murder mystery has me on the edge of my seat each chapter, overanalysing every word and action to figure it out. Ofcourse, I didn't, but that didn't take away the enjoyability of the book.

My mind is all over the place right now, so I'll probably edit this review later on.

I'm trying to give Sarah J. Mass a chance... I decided to start with the throne of glass series. it was fairly good I guess? I'm not totally obsessed with it, as other people who fall inlove with the series and binge read it in a single week, but ill continue reading it to see how it goes... if i like the books later on, I'm going to read the assassins' blade third or fourth. i had huge huge hopes for this one, didn't really live up to too much expectations, but i hope it does in the later books.
took me a while to finish but as it picked up at the end i really enjoyed it!!
please don't hate me for this, i'm DNFing at 34% - rant review incoming
I'll start by saying that I am not the intended audience for this book, it's a YA novel and unfortunately I need to accept that I am no longer part of that category. I really wanted to like this, everyone loves this and the series - I really wanted to be a part of it ):
I just can't justify spending my free time (what little of it I have) trying to trudge through something I don't like. I started reading this almost a week ago and am no where near halfway which is really unusual for me. I just didn't want to pick this up and when I did I got so distracted by other things. Everyone has been saying that it gets better as the series goes on and I wholeheartedly believe you - I just don't have the time or the want to do it ):
let's get into actually WHY I personally didn't like this... ๋⭑☽.
oh. my. god. friggin insane. had my jaw on the floor. had me setting down the book to ponder what i just read. wow.
I read this book in 3 sittings over a day and a half if that gives you any idea on pacing and the one-more-chapter-what-happens-next element.
Assassins, trials, duels, some mystical otherworldlyness, female friendship, an optional side quest of a love triangle... it just hit the spot.
I will say, as much as I liked Celeana, she was a little too young, too overly talented at very random things, and weirdly oblivious to people sneaking up on her- for an assassin!- and it took me out of the story sometimes.
Still super fun and definitely a reading rut buster.
This is a captivating fantasy novel that truly shines in its magical elements and world-building. SJM creates a rich, immersive universe filled with intrigue and wonder. The magical system is intricately designed, offering a unique take that keeps readers engaged and curious. The detailed settings, from opulent palaces to mystical landscapes, are vividly described, transporting readers directly into the story's heart. While the character development and pacing might not appeal to everyone, the strength of the magical elements and the complexity of the world more than make up for it. This book is a must-read for fans of fantasy who appreciate a well-crafted magical universe.
A lot of people may not like her writing style after reading her later works but it was nice to get through especially considering SJM was 16 when this was written.
I'll kneel before no man buT ILL KNEEL BEFORE YOU MY QUEEN. MY LIEGE. MY CHAMPION CELAENA.
also hehehehehehehe Dorian is so bae
and CHAOL MY ANGEL BABYGIRL A THOUSAND TIMES I LOVE YOU
This book was fast paced the dialogue was really good and witty. I like that the main character is strong physically and emotionally and she is able to make decisions for herself and not just be a lovesick puppy. (At least at this point) What I did not like about this book is that the end wrapped up super fast. I feel like a little more time could have been spent on that, also more time spent on the test she had to go through. The author only said what it was and the results of the test. I felt good while reading this book felt like the start of a new romance and the gettingess that comes with it. I also felt the tension between the two love interests. I feel like this book taught me to always be strong and to never give up. It taught me to keep fighting to the end especially for something that is important to you. Also to choose for yourself and don't make decisions just to benefit other people. My favorite character was Celaena she is a strong female character and she's smart and I can think for herself.
Devoured. I read this whole series in 2020 when I was nursing an acotar hangover and I originally didn't like how different tog felt. But I forgot how good and how MAGIC this series is, especially now doing a re-read and knowing what's coming. I love fantasy forever
I was scared to read this book thinking I wouldn't like it because of all the mixed reviews I kept seeing about just needing to just get through the first book to enjoy the series. However, I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed it! Cant wait to pick up the next book!
