The overarching story is interesting, and it makes a change to read things from a Chinese point of view, however the prose has tendency to the “stolid” (another review described it as a summary of a story rather than a story, which I would agree with in places). Whether this comes from the original source or from the translation is impossible to say.

As others have also mentioned, the first 50% is a bit of a slog, although it picks up once all cards are on the table.

So, I'd recommend this as something that is interesting to read, but I am not sure I am inspired to read the next in the trilogy.
