Godalmighty, what a dreary story. Quit at 4/5. Could not be bothered with these flaky characters and their flaky affaires anymore.
I'm normally such a fan but this book was not it for me. I didn't like hearing about the predatory behavior and tbh I saw the twists happening from a mile away. Alas.
Very graphic ending. Zero likeable characters. This is definitely not FM's best.
McFadden is very popular so I thought I would read one of her novels. I didn't like it much. I found the characters annoying and didn't care much about the story by halfway though I just skimmed it to see the final wrap. There is some novels that aren't the best but it feels fun reading them...this isn't one of those novels for me.
OMG!!!
The plot twists just kept coming! I actually couldn't put this book down
A page turner for sure, and a lot of surprises, some of which I saw coming and others shocked me. But, I have a hard time with the ridiculous dialogue, hence the 3 stars.
Every time I thought I knew what was going on, a new twist was revealed proving otherwise. So good.
This book was a 3/5 for me. It was an easy-read psychological thriller. I enjoyed reading it and looked forward to it every day. It would have scored a higher rating if there weren’t some major plot holes. I won’t spoil anything, but most major plot twist did not line up with the rest of the book. It didn’t make sense. I did enjoy the story and everything unfolded really nicely. Would recommend to someone interested in an easy read mystery.
Avoid This Book at All Costs!
This book was an absolute disaster! The writing was atrocious, and the poems were cringeworthy. The author's obsession with shoes was baffling, and the characters were poorly developed. I can't believe the author thought this was publishable.
Don't waste your time on this torture. I'd be happy to recommend better books if you're looking for a good read. Trust me, you won't regret avoiding this horrible creation.
Standard Freida McFadden. I don't know what else to say. It was fun and twisty. Good palate cleanser.
God, I really want to give FM books a chance. After The Housemaid (only the first one) and Never Lie, I liked the author and hoped I had found my go-to quick-read mystery author.
But, Jesus. I don't think I huffed and rolled my eyes as much as I did while reading this book. The inner monologues of the student and the teacher were nearly identical, nonsensical, and inconsistent.
Sometimes, the student would have way too mature thoughts and then switch to incredibly naive ones. Similarly, the teacher, who is supposed to be in her 30s (?), also had very normal for her age thoughts and then suddenly had very immature thoughts. I legitimately had such a hard time remembering whose perspective I was reading many times in the book.
The twists were less than mild. One was very predictable, the other felt like it was breezed through, and it felt inconsequential even though it was obviously morally as bad as her husband.
I feel bad for leaving such a negative review, but after The Inmate and The Coworker, I just don't think it will get better. Even thinking about all these books, the women's inner monologues seem similarly naive and lacking in common sense. They're predictable and flat.
For what it's worth, as I mentioned above, I recommend The Housemaid (only the first one) and Never Lie. Those are the good ones.
Trigger warning: This book is about inappropriate student/teacher “relationships.”
This was a highly entertaining novel; HOWEVER, the story and subject matter is extremely problematic and toxic. Though this book is a work of “fiction” these types of situations do happen in real life and there is a conversation to be had about romanticizing these types of abusive relationships. Of course, this author isn't the first or last person to do this I guess my notice of it is that it is done so...well?
I did the thing. I read a Freida McFadden book. I wanted to see what the big deal was and I had a migraine yesterday so I decided to start one of her audiobooks. I chose this one because even though the subject matter is uh, beyond messed up and super gross, it’s something that interests me as a past student of a less than trustworthy teacher as well as on a “for science” level.
I can definitely see how these books are considered page-turners, and the audiobook made it even better because Leslie Howard did a great job, especially with Addie’s chapters.
The Teacher didn’t feel especially suspenseful as I pretty much knew where it was going (aside from the epilogue, which I did not see coming and I can see why some people don’t like it though I can’t decide where I stand), but it’s one of those thrillers you can just have a quick, fun time with.
I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s almost on par with something you like because it’s so bad it’s good. Again, not saying it’s one of those things, it just kind of gave me that guilty pleasure feeling I get from those things, and that feels good sometimes!
EDIT: omg I just read a review that talked about the epilogue and pointed out some EXTREMELY odd things about it that I can’t get over and now I am laughing so hard like wtf how did she even write that epilogue? My only excuse for not realizing sooner is that my brain was completely melted from my migraine. I 100% understand why it ruined the book for so many people it’s so hilarious like please read this book just to be mad at the epilogue it will kill you. I’m dead.

there are a lot of flaws about this book but personally, i had a great time! i know many people won't like it because it's not a super well written thriller but i ate this crap up lmao. If you like page-turning, trashy thrillers like me, it's definitely worth a read!
