A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a run-down tenement where a life or death decision must be made. In that small apartment, “Black” and “White,” as the two men are known, begin a conversation that leads each back through his own history, mining the origins of two fundamentally opposing world views. White is a professor whose seemingly enviable existence of relative ease has left him nonetheless in despair. Black, an ex-con and ex-addict, is the more hopeful of the men–though he is just as desperate to convince White of the power of faith as White is desperate to deny it.

Questo libricino è davvero un colpo duro. Stringato, essenziale, spartano negli ambienti, spartano nei personaggi, niente fronzoli, niente compromessi, come McCarthy ci ha abituato.
Una sola convinzione: “o hai una ragione per vivere, «zuccherino», o il Sunset Limited è la fuori che ti aspetta”. Passa tutti i giorni e sfreccia a centotrenta all'ora. Un uomo, Nero, pregno della fede di Dio, «sa che c'è Gesù in questa stanza» perchè si è ritrovato con il corpo cucito a metà e Dio l'ha salvato; un altro uomo, Bianco, sa che «Sopra ogni gioia pende l'ombra dell'ascia» e «Non vedo l'ora di strofinare il naso contro la sua guancia ossuta», perché «tutta questa storia di Dio è una gran cazzata» e il mondo è solo «un lazzaretto dello spirito».
Un dialogo drammatico tra queste due persone, un uomo che tenta di salvare l'altro. Geniale e profondo per 108 pagine che ti fanno riflettere, davvero.
Per pensare al significato della vita. Consigliato.
True to form, McCarthy's melancholic, devastating view of humanity pervades this engrossing drama. Echoes of Blood Meridian, with his trademark fatalism beautifully wrought in fully imagined characters.
