I saw this book talked about on book blogs and knew I had to read it. It sounded like a lovely romance with depth and really what it ended up being is a Contemporary fiction with a sweet romance. I was impressed.
At first I was thrown since I was lead to believe it would be like any romance, but no this will have more to do with living life and understanding yourself than love. Once I understood this, I was totally on board. This way the characters were so much deeper and I really felt that connection to them all. Yeah, pretty much all the characters that are featured, except one (which I will mention soon). Calla did annoy me at a few points, as did her father, but I think her character is the way it is in order to make a point. I still rooted for her and wanted her to become fulfilled. I followed her emotions with laughing, smiling, cringing, and eventually even crying.
This is an emotional book.
While there is a love story here, it doesn't just revolve around our main couple. There are other stories going on as well which might just break your heart. There is romantic love, familial love, unrequited love, and soulmates. Found family is also a huge theme here – and I'm so down for that. While real family is pushed here, I was glad to see that theme of creating your own family, because that is true family to me. So much going on here, I think it is easy to see WHY I became so attached to the characters. This all being said, I feel like Susan (Calla's mom) and Simon (her step-father) have a hurtful relationship for Simon. Susan is definitely a character I didn't like. Simon deserves so much better– he deserves love and affection and not leftovers. Their relationship is the only one that left a bad taste in my mouth, with his and Calla's bringing sweet tears to my eyes, because I know how amazing relationships with step-parents can be.
Let me end with saying that the writing is phenomenal. I truly could picture every setting in this book and all the interactions. As I mentioned before, I was able to connect with the characters with their love, pain, and happiness, affecting me.
I highly recommend this book to everyone who likes reading contemporary fiction – romance or not. Trust me, this book is worth a chance and is honestly probably the best New Adult book I've ever read.
