Romantasy at its finest! Vampires and a gorey fight to the death contest, what else could anyone ask for? Let me go binge read the rest of the series
I really enjoyed Cassandra's previous series Daughter of no Worlds and I was really curious with this new one, which has been receiving so much attention and positive reviews.
This book follows the story or Oraya, a human girl who was rescued and raised by a vampire king. She dreams of changing the world and, for that, she needs to become stronger. She has been training her entire life to win the Kejari and conquer her place in the world. Is she going to be strong enough to beat the competition, while being an easy prey among predators?
What I liked in the book:
- Strong, fearless and smart FMC. Oraya always used her brain in the trials, being this the main reason for her success.
- Carissa is wonderful writing villains and morally gray characters. This is true for both of her series and one of the reasons I enjoy so much her books.
- The romance development was great and mainly based on their connection, interactions and friendship. We hardly get any mention to how handsome the MMC is and this is much appreciated.
- Although I easily predicted the main revelations of the story, I didn't predict the way they happen and I was nicely surprised by it. This was also true for Daughter of no worlds and one of the reasons I think Clarissa is currently one of the best writers of the genre.
What I think it could have been done better:
- It's hard to please everyone regarding the worldbuilding info dump but I believe this book deserved a bit more and I hope the next books expand on this.
I must admit I'm not a huge fan of vampires and I'm getting a bit tired of all the horniness related to blood sucking in recent fantasy series. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed this first book and I'm quite excited to continue the series.
Perfect reading for ACOTAR, TOG and Blood and Ash fans. I think it actually has potential to turn out to be better than those series.

The Serpent and the Wings of Night is everywhere you look these days, especially if you frequent romance book friendly places. Tiktok, in particular, is all but enamored with this book. That wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement, for me, as TikTok doesn't exactly have a great track record with recommending books. BUT then I saw a few friends pick this book up and enjoy it. Like, thoroughly enjoy it. That was what got my attention. I had tried Carissa Broadbent's first series and was not a fan. I was more than hesitant to give her another chance. But oh man, am I glad that I did. FORTUNATELY, Broadbent's writing has seriously improved. Like enough that I can say, without doubt, that The Serpent and the Wings of Night is absolutely worth the read, especially if you're into fantasy romance.
If you're looking for what this book feels like, I can hammer it down in THREE titles. Take The Hunger Games, plus ACOTAR, and add in a little Twlight action, throw it all in a blender, and you'll get The Serpent and the Wings of Night. Our main character, Oraya, is a human raised by a vampire king. He's raised her to be ruthless, violent, and efficient at killing. She's prey in a world of predators — there's no option here for her to be soft. Every...[mumbles I don't remember] years there's a great competition where the winner gets to ask a boon of the vampire's mother/goddess. Oraya's father wants her to enter so she can be made as powerful as he is. Only problem is — she's going to be the only human in the competition. Obviously you see the problem.
So she enters, and has to prove that she's just as competent at killing as all the vampires. Blah, blah, blah, she ends up meeting Raihn. (Sidenote — again, Carissa, why haven't you included a pronunciation guide? I was just calling him Rain and hoping that was right!!!!!) Raihn is a huge vampire, powerful, protective, and sarcastic. I loved him immediately, because I'm a sucker for all of those things separately, but when you combine them? WHOO BOY. Anyway, obviously they sort of circle each other romantically, and eventually fall in love. Ish. (You'll understand when you read.) There's one steamy sex scene, and a couple like...vaguely warm make out sessions. Not really the steam I was promised, TikTok! Like, ACOTAR is miles steamier. Oh well, still absolutely worth the read.
There's a lot of death, blood, and violence in here, but I mean...it's a book about vampires. You shouldn't really be surprised by those being included. I wouldn't really call this a dark romance, either, but I think some might call it that? (They're in a competition where death is all but certain, and they fall in love.) Either way, I really enjoyed this, and the ending knocked me on my butt it was so good. Headed right into the second book now, wish me luck!!!
Forbidden love lies and secrets
Story was solid love plot and the characters. Can't wait to read the next book to see what happens between Raihn and Oraya.
Devoured this in just under 24 hours. Absolutely could not put it down and am super excited for book 2!
This was so brutal and bloody and I absolutely loved it!
I liked that this wasn't a simple good vs evil situation, all the sides weren't great so any outcome was going to be bad for people involved. The stakes felt high and the outlook bleak, but it was so compulsively readable.
I also loved that Oraya wasn't the untouchable, perfect warrior so many are in these types of books. Yes she's an amazing fighter but also grabs the wrong end of her blade sometimes
5 estrellas y MERECIDAS
3.5
i...... was kinda disappointed with this book. my expectations were VERY high because of booktok and tbh it was predictable and reminded me of another fantasy series ive read. it just. wasn't very original.
DNF at 48%.
What is a point of writing a long book if nothing in it has any substance? Why? Why would you do that?
I am so sorry for the time that I've spent reading this book. That many 5-star ratings fooled me.
