It was so confusing to the point that I did not want to pick up this book to continue.
Overall I enjoyed this one. The author's note mentioned it feeling weird to edit this book in 2020, and it definitely feels weird to read after having lived through so many climate emergencies in 2021.
Most of the characters are interesting and the central dilemmas of the book feel real. I loved the robot U-me and Cee's routine on the island. However, I thought the romance was extremely silly and the ending was a little muddled.
I liked this but was a little bit of a slow start for me. I think if you're looking for a twisty, sci-fi read about climate change and family, this is for you!
I loved this.
The author drops you straight into the plot when you wake up with one sister, who has amnesia on a deserted island and all she can remember is her desperate need to get back to her sister. Her sister lives in one of the eco cities their parents helped build due to Earth being ravaged by the consequences of climate change. This book is a dystopia, a mystery, and a bit of a thriller all rolled into one.
I loved reading about both sisters, especially Kay. She was so dear to me, from the start, and following along with her journey was one of my favourite parts of the book.
I was so focused on aspects of the story that I missed others unfolding until they were right in front of me. That???s something I think most straight thrillers don???t manage that often. There were so many moments where a twist happened, and I was gripped by the intense urge to keep on reading despite struggling to keep my eyes open.
I really loved this book. I believe I have recently picked up a copy of the author's first book and I can???t wait to get to it now.
Cee's story is the only reason I'm giving this three stars. But it only barely managed to get the three stars too.
Perhaps if I understood anything that happened in Kasey's story, I would have liked this book a lot more.
I was entranced through most of my reading this. Joan He really knows how to pull the reader in and keep them there. I'm not a big fan of sci-fi so I did go in expecting not to understand stuff. I actually did understand so that's good! I loved the writing so much. It flowed between the sisters' chapters so well and that's all due to the author.
The plot is not easily explainable or understandable but surprisingly that didn't confuse me! A reason why I don't often read sci-fi books is because the plots tend to be harder for me to understand than other books. It's also a testament to He's writing; because it could've easily been too confusing and I would've dnfed.
Kasey and Cee were both very interesting characters. I think I liked Cee more at the start and then Kasey later on. I liked their sibling relationship, even if they weren't right by each other. I think I do prefer it when siblings aren't together physically as it tests their relationship.
I thought the ecological theme was very interesting and well handled. It's a constant topic in reality and something that should be looked at more. I think He brought it down to a YA level but didn't look down on it so much.
Wow. It's been a few months since a book took me on such a journey. Beautifully written and though a bit slow in the beginning, by the time it sunk its hooks into me, it was full speed ahead. That said, I definitely had some questions about the science and overly-complex “ending”, but they didn't detract from my overall enjoyment.
Holy Mother of Zeus, I am going to be thinking about this book until it comes out and again when I read the finished copy.
This was definitely out of my usual comfort zone reading. I am picky with my books and even more so with ARCs that I hope to get but this one blew me away.
Joan He tells the story so masterfully: two sisters, worlds apart as well as secrets, memories, technology, disasters, a lot of which reflects, in a sense, today's world, or perhaps, the world we are heading into if we don't do something about our actions.
But that is a topic of discussion for another day.
I loved Celia, or Cee as she is called as well. But I also loved Kasey. I really loved the contrast between the two but still, they fit together like puzzle pieces.
I will probably be screaming about this book until and after it is published (Less than a month away! May 4th!) and people can buy it. This might become my new comfort book and it is definitely one of my favourites, despite reading only 2 other books and being in the middle of like 5.
Thank you to the published for giving an ARC
