You're never too old to learn, and today I learned about the incredibly inspiring life of Mary Walker. She was over a hundred years old when she achieved her childhood dream of learning to read, long past the days when she lived as a child in slavery - emancipated as a teen.
This book may be aimed at children, but I believe anyone could enjoy it (hence my over-shelving in every age tag I have) and I personally got a little teary-eyed with happiness while reading of Miss Mary's accomplishment. The artwork is charming and the writing is both accessible to children while not too simple to appeal to adults who want to learn something new about a remarkable woman.
Now excuse me while I go re-evaluate some of my “I'm too old to learn this” hangups.
Truely a lifetime learner ~ An inspiration goal to one day learn to read and have such a personal family bible kept all her life. Mary Walker was born into slavery and faced a lifetime of hardship, happy moments, family, with a lifetime goal to one day read. Truly an inspiration to life time learners everywhere, you are never too old to learn!
