First of all I'd like to thank NetGalley for letting me read an ARC of “Summoner: The Novice” from Taran Matharu.
This is the first time I'm writing a review of sorts and it only reflects my opinions about this book. So I do hope I don't step on anyone's toes.
Excerpt from the description:
“Fletcher was nothing more than a humble blacksmith's apprentice, when a chance encounter leads to the discovery that he has the ability to summon demons from another world. Chased from his village for a crime he did not commit, he must travel with his demon to the Vocans Academy, where the gifted are trained in the art of summoning....”
Thoughts:
First of all I'd like to start off by saying I really enjoyed this book. After a slow start where the reader is introduced to the world and its workings, things pick up considerably and one is hard pressed in putting the book down. The magic system is well taught trough and there is a surprising depth to it. We see the characters grow and change, and they all have a profundity. The academy setting gives off a Harry Potter vibe which in this case is high praise in deed.
Generally when reading this title one is reminded of familiar fantasy concepts but they often have a fresh spin to them. This is exactly what I found to be a strength of this book. Its familiar enough we feel at home but with an interesting spin to it to seem new and engaging.
I do not see myself nowhere near adept enough at writing to judge the writing of this book, but in my humble opinion it seemed good except for a few formatting issues of which I am sure they will be corrected by the time the book hits the shelf's.
I'd just like to say that this is still a YA books so some things might seem unrealistic or a bit fast-paced but they are not glaringly obvious that they take you out of the immersion in this world. I can't wait for the next part and can only recommend this as a lovely read.
Cheers
