I was a little hesitant going into this one solely because of the whole mail-order bride thing but luckily it wasn't an actual mail-order bride situation, at least not in the literal sense. For a short book this one packed a punch. Both characters were pretty badass while also slowly becoming vulnerable with each other. There was steam there was humor and some action and it all made for an enjoyable quick read.
I picked this one up from Kindle Unlimited and really wasn't sure what I was getting myself into.
I will say I fell in love with this book and the couple when Anja declared she was going to kill Kael... to his face and all he did was smile. Absolutely loved them. Kael, although violent, is an honorable man and I loved how he acted with Anja. Anja also had time to get to know Kael which lead to a semi-slow burn romance. I really really liked these characters, okay?
There isn't much going on here and to be honest, sometimes it felt like we were thrown into the middle of a story, although most things are explained so I never felt too out of depth. The fighting was written well too.
If you're looking for a quick read with a good romance and characters, with some fun action scenes, and a world you wish you could read more about, this is the one for you. I will definitely be reading more by this author. I only wish I could read more about Anja and Kael and their badassness.
In a word: fun. This is not high-brow, need-to-think-on-it-awhile literature, people. But who needs that all the time? No one. This was just fun, a classic sword-and-spell kind of adventure with a lot of longing and hot steamy bits. And the most important bit? It's well-written, which means you can dive right in without having to justify your interest in the story. You wanna read fantasy romance that doesn't take too long to get to the good bits? Here you go, pick this one up right off of Kindle Unlimited.
The main male character, Kael, is a barbarian/warrior/conqueror who has a secret soft heart for his people. The main female character, Anja, is a warrior-ish princess who at first absolutely does not like our conqueror, but then (of course) grows to love him as she learns more about who he actually is.
Four absolutely fun stars. I think I'll read the rest of these when I get the chance!
