I loved the idea, I really did. But, the execution was something I was not a fan of. The whole book asks questions and it's only at the 340 page mark where it really starts answering them. For me, this wasn't the book.
I loved it, loved the characters, loved the way it was written, but wtf the ending 😭😭
“A kind of lie told for someone else's sake, a lie that sits between goodness and wrong, just as midnight is the moment between night and morning.”
This book, the story, the characters were all amazing. I've not read the Winner's trilogy yet but if it's even half as good as this book, I'm looking forward to reading it.
Pros:
- Lost magic.
- Main characters- Nirrim and Sid were awesomeee.
- Nirrim was the innocent but nice one. I liked how she did things even though she was afraid of them.
- Sid was written just like a sarcastic and mysterious male character
Y'all know I love roguish, aloof love interests but ESPECIALLY when they're women

First 3/4 of the book was interesting but not enough for me to binge read. The last quarter of it? Delightful.
if nirrim becomes the villain in the next book im gonna love it so much yall don't understand
Y'all this book was so great.
I savored this book. It is full of longing, there is a mystery, and it explores the class dynamics of Herrath.
Nirrim lives on an island full of rulings and tithes. If a rule is broken - a tithe must be paid. When she unexpectedly meets Sid her eyes are opened to the possibility that not everything is how it should be.
I am still not over Rutkoski delivering main characters who I love even among their flaws. Throughout this whole book I adored Sid because I am a predictable queer. And sweet Nirrim!? As much as I am a fan of this romance I also love the investigation into the High Caste magic.
Nothing brought me as joy lately as screaming at my audiobook. I'm in deep. I'd like six books please.
Sera was in hiding and healing animals when she could and then a God walked in the door.
Serket aka Sera was keeping a low profile and moving every couple decades. Being an immortal God in the age of technology having no one notice you never age it is hard with a camera everywhere. Sera stayed on the down low, lived quietly, and healed animals when she could.
Then one day the animal she tried to save turned into a God. Sed said he needed her help to heal another higher God that her familiars poisoned. Time is running out and before her magic disappears altogether, she needs to save him. The problem is that someone is just as quickly erasing her and her magic from history.
Protectors of Poison: Scorpio (B07KFJ35HF, 2018) is the first book in the “Forgotten Gods” series by Laura Greenwood and I already cannot wait until the next book. (Ssshhh I have it right here next to me.)
I do not want to say a lot because this is a novella, BUT...it has everything. What do I mean by everything? It has action, mystery, romance, and oh yeah it has sex. Not the kind of sex I usually go for, but enough to make you say “yes” thank you Sed.
Greenwood gives us a strong female character in Sera, but someone who has been hurt by love in the past. I think the most interesting character though is the villain. I do not want to give anything away, but I would love to have a conversation about the villian and gender identity. (laugh) No the story is not that deep kind of story...that's just me going that deep at 3:00 a.m. this morning (laugh).
Yes, this is the type of story that will keep you up until you finish it. I am not a Scorpio or a Cancer, but Greenwood makes me want to play with one. You will want to too. ✶✶✶✶
