Tijdens het lezen vond ik dit een heel gezellige, meeslepende cozy mysterie, maar verschillende ontknopingen en onthullingen lieten een wrange smaak na, waardoor ik uiteindelijk vooral een ietwat gedesillusioneerd gevoel overhoud.

Vooral het feit dat het hoofdpersonage niet consistent werd geportretteerd, is waar de auteur voor mij de mist in ging.
Molly wordt geïntroduceerd als iemand die enorm onwetend en naïef is op het vlak van persoonlijke interacties. Ze heeft de grootste moeite met het lezen van verbale en non-verbale communicatie en interpreteert alles in een recht-toe-recht-aan manier. Ook haar wereldbeeld is heel zwart-wit, gekoppeld met een vrij sterk gevoel voor rechtvaardigheid. Dit zorgde er bij mij voor dat ik meteen enorm veel sympathie voor haar voelde. Zo verzuchte ik meermaals “Ocharme, Molly.” als ze weer eens iets verkeerd had begrepen.
Naarmate het verhaal vorderde echter namen al deze kwaliteiten af en weer toe, afhankelijk van de richting waarin de auteur wou gaan. Hierdoor krijgen we verschillende ontknopingen, die voor mij ongepast leken en op het einde dus die wrange smaak nalieten.

Ook wou de auteur precies te veel doen in dit ene boek: en een atypisch hoofpersoon, en een resem van sociale problemen aankaarten, en een ingewikkeld plot met verschillende grote plotwendingen, en een ontroerende, slow-burn romance...
Jammer, want het concept zat goed.

Man, SO close. This would have been a five star book if it didn't have that “final reveal” at the end that made little to no sense with everything we'd read up until that point. Still think it's worth reading as it was a truly delightful and charming murder mystery, with very charismatic characters and some lovely relationships, but I really really wish the author hadn't pulled the reverse UNO card on the entire story at the very end.

It's probably more of a 3.5 but I'm rounding up.

I'm not much of a mystery reader these days but I do end up picking up a couple every year just to keep in touch with the genre. When I saw the cover for this book, I was immediately tempted because I can't resist gorgeous red covers. And the title and the minimalist style also intrigued me. As soon as I got my hands on the audiobook, I picked it up immediately. And this was unexpectedly fun.

This was surprisingly easy to read and I breezed through the whole thing in just a few hours. I alternated between the ebook and audio and I loved the experience of that. The author makes the choice to narrate this whole story in a single first person POV and while it could have backfired if not done properly, I think it was executed pretty well. This is kind of a locked room mystery and while there is some focus on finding the culprit, I will say that it's not the main focus of the novel. The mystery aspects are pretty simplistic, we can easily latch onto a few characters as possible perpetrators, but the author also manages to surprise us with some last minute revelations. I also loved the unexpected found family trope which only enhances the kind of cozy vibes that this whole book is going for.

Molly is the one who's POV we are listening to exclusively. So your enjoyment of the book will depend on how much you like her. She is a maid, who loves her job, gets immense satisfaction when she sees the meticulous cleaning she has done, but also realizes that she is mostly invisible to others both due to her “lowly” job as well as her personality. It's never named but she is definitely neurodivergent, unsure how to navigate social situations or understand body language, is very meticulous and straightforward, is not good at judging people but is capable of some deception because that's how she is able to cope in her interactions with others. I was sad at her naïveté many times when I could see she was being lied to and would get into trouble later, but I was also amazed at how much she valued the people who acknowledged her and didn't treat her as if she was invisible. She really keeps her grief and her resentments close to her chest and does what she thinks is best. She may not respond to situations like what we would expect but I think the author does a good job reiterating that it doesn't make her any less or weird and that she deserves all the respect and dignity, just like any human.

There are many side characters here, some mysterious, some sweet and nice, some sly and sinister and others just going through life the best way they can. I don't want to say more about them because looking at them through Molly's eyes and understanding them in a way that she cannot is one of the best parts of the book.

In the end, this was pretty fun. For a murder mystery, it is more focused on the main character and the way she goes about in life and that may not be the cup of tea for more seasoned readers of the genre. But if you are looking for more of cozy vibes, interesting ensemble, a quirky main character and a breezy read, do go for it. I would also recommend the audiobook because the narrator succeeds very well in ensuring that we understand Molly as a person and not just a caricature, narrating her with care and earnestness.

Molly is proud of her work as a maid in an elite hotel, but she has struggled to pay her rent and to keep going after the death of her beloved grandmother. Molly is awkward in social situations and, to help her cope, her grandmother taught her a series of aphorisms that offer pithy advice. And so Molly plugs along, cheerfully cleaning up other people's messes until one day, as she is tidying up a room, she finds one of the guests in his bed, dead.

Molly is a delightful character, naive in the ways of the wicked in the world, firm in her ideas of what is right.

A lovely little mystery.

Molly's character shines through the pages of this book and it is hard not to fall in love with her. Yes she is quirky and different and not good in social situations but she has an absolute heart of gold. I love her relationship with her grandmother, who has recently passed. Her Gran's words still echo through Molly, showing her the way to behave and manage difficult situations. This book has a cosy mystery feel to it, with the characters at the heart. If you loved books like Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and Saving Missy then this is a must read. I truly enjoyed this debut novel; set in a glamorous hotel with high profile guests, a murder, a police investigation and a story of acceptance and friendship.

Many thanks to Nita Prose, for writing such a heartfelt novel and for giving the character Molly such a prominent voice in this story. I devoured this gorgeous book.

I loved this book! Molly was so delightful, and also complex in an unexpected way. I was so happy with the twists and turns and also with the ending.

I love a book with a quirky main character. Molly the Maid- you are delightful!

I have... mixed feelings. It is a decent book, but just so sad. I also feel like the author did not do the character justice and even made some characters into caricatures. Yet, I really did like Molly.

Came in for the mystery, stayed for the interesting protagonist and dynamics. An engrossing read from beginning to end!

I found the beginning to be too slow for my liking. A slow burn mystery with the quirkiest character I've ever followed. I feel like I may have enjoyed it more as an audiobook. I feel like I couldn't get into it as much as I had hoped, I had a hard time grasping Molly's unique narration. It picked up the last 100 pages and I enjoyed the ending, especially the epilogue! 

Molly Gray on hienon hotellin huonesiivooja. Hän on enimmäkseen täysin näkymätön tyyppi, johon kukaan ei kiinnitä huomiota. No, ei Molly ihan tavallinen siivooja ole: hän rakastaa työtään ja tekee sitä paremmin kuin kukaan muu hotellissa, minkä kyllä asiakkaatkin huomaavat.

Molly on myös neuroepätyypillinen ja vaikuttaa olevan autismin kirjolla, vaikka sitä ei suoraan sanotakaan (hän on “erityinen”). Mollylla on esimerkiksi hyvin kirjaimellinen suhtautuminen asioihin, ja hänen on vaikea tulkita muita ihmisiä oikein. Molly elää pientä elämää mummonsa kanssa, kunnes mummo eräänä päivänä kuolee ja Molly jää yksin.

Kirjan tapahtumat käynnistyvät, kun Molly siivoaa totuttuun tapaan hotellissa paljon asuvan liikemiehen herra Blackin sviittiä ja löytää sviitistä herra Blackin makaamassa elottomana lattialla. Käy ilmi, että asiassa on syytä epäillä henkirikosta, mutta kuka on syyllinen? Onko se kenties Giselle Black, herra Blackin nuori toinen vaimo, jota monet pitävät onnenonkijana? Tapahtuvat saavat Mollyn kannalta epämiellyttäviä käänteitä, jotka kääntävät epäilyksiä myös Mollyn suuntaan.

Takakansi mainostaa Huonesiivoojaa “suljetun paikan murhamysteerinä”, mutta sitä tämä ei kyllä ole, eikä sellaista tästä kannata odottaa. Ei tässä pääse arvuuttelemaan, kuinka rikos on voitu tehdä; herra Blackin kuolemassa ei ole mitään sillä tavalla salaperäistä. Mysteeri nousee lähinnä siitä, että Molly on ollut alkuun kovin sinisilmäinen ja helposti johdateltavissa. Lukijalle käy nopeammin ilmi, ketkä kaikki tarinan roistoja oikein ovatkaan.

Juoni ei ole Huonesiivoojan ykkösvahvuuksia. Siinä on suorastaan hölmöjä käänteitä, kun Molly apulaisineen juonii tarinan kelmejä kaltereiden taakse. Pari yllättävää ja kiinnostavaa kohtaa siinä kuitenkin on. Ihan kaikkea kirjan rakenteesta en kovin hienosti koottuna pitänyt, osa on kovin helppoa ja ilmeistä. Tämä ei siis todellakaan ole mikään timanttinen murhamysteeri, eikä kannata esimerkiksi odottaa Mollyn ratkovan murhaa, niinkuin kustantamon kuvauksesta voisi luulla.

Parasta kirjassa on kuitenkin Molly. Päähenkilön sympaattisuus kantaa tätä kirjaa alusta loppuun. Mollyssä on paljon samaa kuin Lähikaupan nainen -kirjan Keikossa, joka on myös autismin kirjolle asettuva päähenkilö vaatimattomana pidetyssä työssä, jonka selkeät säännöt ja käytösmallit antavat tarvittua apua ihmisten kanssa vuorovaikutuksessa olemiseen. Mollyn persoonallisuus on hurmaava. Ei tarvitse kuin katsella kirjan GoodReadsissa runsain mitoin saamia viiden tähden arvioita, joissa kautta linjan rakastetaan Mollya. Elokuvakin on luvassa, päärooliin on jo nimetty Florence Pugh.

This was not good. I kept trying to finish it as a light read, but finally convinced myself to spend my time on books I enjoy. Why so many stars? Maybe I read a different book than all of these reviewers.
