#1 New York Times–Bestselling Series: A warlock and a demon-hunter must journey into the heart of evil—but first they need to find a babysitter . . .
Life is good for Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood. They’re living together in a fabulous loft, their warlock son, Max, has started learning to walk, and the streets of New York are peaceful and quiet—as peaceful and quiet as they ever are, anyway.
Until the night that two old acquaintances break in and steal the powerful Book of the White. Now Magnus and Alec will have to drop everything to get it back. They need to follow the thieves to Shanghai, they need to call some backup to accompany them, and they need a babysitter. Also, someone has stabbed Magnus with a strange magical weapon that is changing the very nature of his powers.
Fortunately, their backup consists of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and newly minted Shadowhunter Simon. In Shanghai, they learn that a much darker threat awaits them. Magnus’s magic is growing unstable, and if they can’t stop the demons flooding into the city, they might have to follow them all the way back to the source—to the very realm of the dead.

I buddy read this book with Erin. We've been making our way through Cassandra Clare's books for the past year or two. I had high hopes for this book because I love Magnus and Alec (Malec) and I loved the first book in this trilogy unfortunately this one fell a little flat for me.
I love Alec and Magnus together but things were off between them in this book understandably so. Even though I understand why Magnus was a little different at times I did not enjoy reading it. It was very frustrating to me. Also everyone was just making one stupid choice after another one without really thinking through anything which honestly at this point it's kind of expected when it comes to Clare but also at this point I am over so much of it. The other thing that bothered me was how it ended. It was abrupt and felt like it cut off in the middle of the story.
While this one didn't fully work for me I still can't help but be sucked into the story and love following Alec and Magnus which is why this one gets the 3 star rating from me.
