"An old queen dies. A new one arises. That's how it's supposed to work. When the power tore itself loose, it took everything with it except for one image: a little girl with coppery hair and pale-blue eyes. She was too blurry to make out--even as Kaarin tried to focus, her vision doubled, creating two wavering, overlapping faces in the fog. Still, she knew exactly who the little girl was, and what was about to happen to her. Then the last shreds of ice and fire slipped free without a fight, for Kaarin had no strength left to hold on to them. The darkness was complete. The magic was gone. And so was she." -- page 4 of cover

SO, maybe this wasnt as good as I was expecting because of the impending stormpocalypse known as hurricane Matthew looming over my head. Ah, anyways, this book. it was okay. The main character, Elli, believes she is going to be the most powerful whatever since the stars foretold it..... blah blah. Turns out she wasn't, which was the best part. Then, turns out she IS super special. ::eyeroll:: And of course her beau is another super special snowflake. Who doesn't want to be. MEEEEEEH, probably will skip the rest of this series for now.
WOW what a book.
I have to admit I was gripped by this book and devoured it. Were there some things I was lackluster about? Definitely, but for some reason I found myself loving every minute of this book.
The pacing of the book went from intense to mellow, but I'm a person that likes the switch up– it gives more meaning to the fast paced or intense sequences. The writing was absolutely well done. I was NEVER bored while reading.
Issues: there were times Elli seemed very young. I see how this might be, but it really took away from her character.
-Really, I did like the characters but I felt they all lacked something in some regard. Oshar had so much potential and then... he fell flat to me. Because I couldn't tell his personality and he pretty much stopped talking to Ellie the relationship between them was meh. I thought it was way too fast and not given time to grow. It just kinda happened.
-Also, Sig is not a ‘good person' but COME ON! I won't go into this more so I don't spoil anything, but I'm sensing that I'm gonna pity the hell out of him later and that kinda sucks.
-The world-building was also lacking. I left the book realizing I know nothing about the Soturi or other players in the political world and even though a map is given in the beginning of the book (awesome) I did not find it to be needed or important.
Good things: NO LOVE TRIANGLE –this could change and oh goodness I thought I saw it coming but it didn't!!
- Perhaps a slight LGBT mention, I was hoping they would delve more into it....
-Interesting magic system that I'm hoping is explained more later because apparently most of what Elli knew was a lie gasp
-Elli, our heroine, is not actually the strongest person in the novel! As of right now, I should say. We will see where this goes which also provides room for growth.
-Good female friendships!!! I cannot love healthy friendships enough.
All in all, this may not have been the most unique novel to ever come out, and it is chalk full of cliche or weird language to indicate arousal, BUT I think there is still something awesome about it and I WILL pick up the sequel when I get the chance :)
